I am expecting baby #6 in early May and we are having our 3rd homebirth But I want this birth to be different, I want a serene, peaceful, relaxed, romantic environment with scents and music. Do any of you know any good scents for birthing and music also? It can be candles or EO's! Thanks sooo much!!

Ohhhhh I think I figured it out - Essential Oils??

I use lavender but that is what centers me anytime.
During pregnancy I light my candles and use lavender bath salts and relax and use positive thinking, positive visualization so that when labor comes it feels familiar and soothing to me.
I do know that you don't want to use certain EOs for instance the ones that are good for headaches - not sure which ones they are because they are vascular dialators - My MW told us that she had one Mama use an EO that was and it was the worst hemorage she ever saw because the vascular dialator brought on more bleeding. She couldn't recall which EO it was though.

I like to listen to Enya and the like when in labor. I also plan on getting a CD of the rosary because that centers me as well.

I plan on using lavender too. I am exploring what music we might use for this birth. For my first birth I listened to native american flutes and loved it.

There's a pretty cool (and cheap!) book called Aromatherapy for mother and baby...heres a link.

Some neat recipes and ideas.

I recently had a lovely homebirth. I used good quality lavendar candles...and I birthed to Enya's newest 'Amarantine'. It was magical.

For an EO I like Lavender. I have a diffuser that I will use this time. In the fast I have put EO in bath and compress water.

Haven't had candles or music.

My births are fast so I guess I dont really have time for any of that plus I am more of a quite person.

My fav to labor by is Handel's Water Music, but I loved it long before I got pg. I also have one of Nature Sounds, waterfalls I think, might be rivers. The sound of the running water is soothing, makes me think I am outside somewhere. I use Vanilla and Lavendar for scents.

I listened to "Inward Harmony" by Marcey Hamm during both of my labors. Very relaxing, very spiritual music. I've actually have spoken with Marcey about the music. Her story is amazing!

I'm a doula and I bring all sorts of EOs to births, the ones I use most are:

Lavendar - relaxation
Clary Sage - helps stimulate labor and relaxation
Eucalyptus mixed with spearmint - on a warm or cool cloth on the forehead
peppermint - put a few drops in the toilet to help mom pee, also helps w/nausea
and a citrus blend - for energy during pushing

I have some nice relaxation CDs I bought at Target. They have a nice lullaby CD that works well for relaxation.

I'm having my first homebirth any day now and bought Clary Sage and Bergamot to uplift my spirits and calm labor pains- both recommended by my Massage Therapist sister who will be offering massage during my labor. I plan to listen to three different CDs that all have a Japanese flute/Zen theme that have proven very relaxing and centering when doing yoga.

I was hoping to listen to some nice music, but I'll be listening to hypnobabies instead.

I keep having this dream, and I have a blend of clary sage and peppermint that I like to sniff whilst I fantasize about my dream hb. Similarly, clannad and loreena mckennitt. The best advice I can give you, though, is to find someone who will build you a nest, burn the e.o's for you, turn the cd player on because otherwise you'll do what I did and give birth on the toilet/kitchen floor/ top of an unprotected pristine white cotton duvet cover, and it'll be a bit of an anticlimax. And no, I'm not joking.

One thing I've read is to be certain you can *stop* the smell during labor. It might be your most favorite smell ever, but you could end up being utterly repulsed by it during labor. This is also why you don't add EO to birthing pool water.

I had some candles all ready to go for my home birth, and I gave birth at high noon in July with the sun blazing in the windows Music and scents would annoy the crap outta me in labor, so I cant help ya there- but under normal circumstances I love lavender scents and vanilla. Get everything ready if you want it, but honestly you may end up not wanting it or even being able to use it!

I've heard that coffee grounds will quickly remove an EO smell. Strange huh? A local MW with several years experience told me that. To be on the safe side, you can use EOs on a cotton ball and if the smell starts to bother you just throw the cotton ball away. I'm a big fan of a few drops of EO on a warm washcloth on the forehead or neck.
