Washing throw pillows?

Okay, so my lovely children who I thought were playing so nicely were actually piling up my couch cushions and jumping all over them (no problem), except that DD helps DS take all his clothes off, then he had an explosive poop which when I found him was all over the inside of his legs outside the diaper and on his belly. I had to give him a bath to clean him up.

Now, back to my living room, I found at least one lump of poopy on the couch (beneath where the cushions would sit). The rest were in the pile they were climbing on, so anything could have been contaminated. I stripped the covers off all the cushions and threw them in the wash (luckily I've done this before and know they will be okay). I have a steam cleaner I'll do the carpet and the couch with that. And the giant teddy bear I guess. Some of the throw pillows had covers too, so I threw those in.

However, I don't know what to do about my cotton throw pillows that don't have covers. They are the real squashy kind made of some microfiber suede-like stuff with cotton inside. I'm sure the fabric would survive washing, but how do I wash them without having them end up all lumpy? Any ideas? Anyone ever washed throw pillows before successfully? All the pillows I've ever washed ended up lumpy.

I would try the steam cleaner on those too.

problem is the pillows are so light and fluffy using the steam cleaner would be harder than hand washing, they'd still be sopping wet. So I guess I'm wondering how to dry throw pillows - is there a trick to getting them to not ball up? I guess my options are hang them to dry or put them in the dryer. The dryer is what I tried last time I think.

I'm also going boiling the water to put in the steam cleaner. Ugh. Maybe its time for new couches? heh

Well, I had a chance to test out how to clean throw pillows today, as both my DC came down with a stomach flu that left me mopping up most of the day. I just threw the pillows into the wash, then the dryer on low. We have a moisture sensor, so it stopped when they were dry. It took a while, but I was busy so didn't notice too much.

: I know, I know, not very green or frugal to run the dryer so long, but there was only so much I could take with two little ones projectile vomiting everywhere!

I have been told to put them in the dryer with tennis balls. The balls fluff the pillows as they dry. I'm not sure about shrinking though.
