New to EC & CD- lots of questions

Hi, I started EC-ing my 5 month old about a week ago. I'm only doing it part time. I try to take him the bathroom a few times a day and leave him nakey butt for a couple hours while ds1 is asleep. The rest of the time he's in sposies but I want to switch to cloth.

I wanted something easy on and off. I was thinking about getting prefolds and using a belt like the one from the EC store. Does anyone do this or have opinions of it?

I also wanted some pocket styles for times that I'm busy or when we're out. I was thinking FB's or BG. I read about the Daisy Doodles and like the idea of just having to change the insert instead of the whole diaper. Are there any others like this? Any thoughts on these?

Another question- if I just want to use prefolds as inserts should I only get the small infant size ones?

Should I even go the CD route since I'm EC-ing, should I just get underwear and stuff them with thick washcloths instead???:

BTW, this forum, heck all of them have been such a HUGE help to me!!

I have used many different kinds of CD and I like prefolds the best, whether at home or out and about. Why? First of all they are so darn inexpensive, a small fraction of what you would pay for BG or FB. I used to get mad when DS would poop in a FB b/c I paid so much for it! I also like how quick they are to get on and off. And at the risk of sounding gross, I like that I can keep using a prefold even if it gets a spot of poo on it. I can just strategically refold it. I'm not talking a full-out bowel movement, just the little skidmarks. Also, when DC grows out of it, they can be used for rags. Love the prefold.

I just bought the belt, but it won't be here until tomorrow...I'll let you know how it goes! I've heard good things about it, but we've stayed waterproof to this point, and I think I'm ready to jump in.

Other than that, I really love the prefolds. I tried the underwear thing, and it does work, but its kind of a pain. Prefolds are certainly the easiest. And like Becky, I hate when I get poop in a pocket diaper...doesn't the boy know they're expensive and we should be keeping them nice and white?!?! Lol. I definately thought the pockets would be nice for out and about, but really, prefolds are REALLY simple.

For what its worth, I don't like the BG, the outside is really plasticy, and the inside isn't soft. And I have 3 of them...maybe I should think about selling them or something!

I use the belt with a pre-fold a lot (the loin cloth look). It's really easy to get off, and if you have a hand (or anotherpre-fold) under them it will hold a pee (for a 3 mo old). The belt is easier then just carrying them around on a pre-fold (less chance of an accident, esp. when squirmy).

I, too, do the strategic re-folding . Particularly at the moment, 'cause the washing machine's broke.

When I'm feeling "on" I'll often switch to pants. I don't mind the extra laundry, but some times they seem to direct the pee staight on to me...

We take cds out and about pretty frequently (up to 5-6 hours). I don't think doing all in ones would be a win - just more to carry around. We are going to try g-diapers on our upcoming trip, tho.

Us too. We are travelling in March and I didn't want to take my whole stash of cloth and have to launder them while there. I just ordered my first g-diapers and am looking forward to trying them.

Hi,

So our prefold belt came in and I love it already! Gonna sew up a few fleece ones myself though, they seem really easy. We're pairing them with babylegs and it is really convenient. Even got DS to potty before bed while he was half asleep...without fumbling with his clothes he was more than willing.

Sticking with covers at night though, because DS likes to nurse all night and I don't want to worry about it.

Just thought I'd update.

Thanks for the info!
I'm going to go ahead and order some prefolds and the belt. I've been kind of lazy the past couple of days just because I don't feel like fooling with the clothes and the diaper and maybe this will get me on the right track!

me too.
we got some that were contoured and with velcro, but still thin and light so it was optimal for ec.
