When are you seeing your care provider?

I just made an appt to see my dr on Mar. 15 - they want to "confirm" my pg before I get a "real" ob appt.

I had BW late today, so hoping its a "good" number, then back again on thurs, ultrasound at 6 weeks (@ fertility clinic - we are high risk for loss) and then meet with my CNM soon after. We are determined to have (although not planning just yet... ) a homebirth with a MW to be determined. But, I feel better with dual care for the sake of a back up given our history...

We have to pick one first! Last time we had a wonderful MW practice but I'm not sure I want to go the hospital route this time. Plus they've added another MW to the practice, there are now 8 and I really would prefer to develop a relationship with a just a few care providers, rather than cycle through so many. So tomorrow night we're touring the local birth center that also does home births. If we like what we see I'll call the next day to make an appt- But I doubt it will be before the end of March.

I called the MW on Monday to see when she wanted to see me and she scheduled me for this Friday. I think because this is our first pregnancy she just wants to talk with us to answer any questions and we will confirm the pregnancy. She said it would be a quick visit and we will have a longer visit at a later date. She asked when I called if I had taken a test at home and I told her I had four positives - she said well you are definately pregnant!

I am really glad she is taking the time to do a relaxed visit to answer questions. When I first met her last summer I had told her how important it was to me to know my care provider prior to getting pregnant. I wanted to be sure I felt comfortable. Many of my friends thought this was silly.

Heather that's not silly at all. It's very important that you feel comfortable and trust your care provider. Your life and the life of your child could end up in their hands. I'm glad you're getting the relaxed visit!

Since I had a loss I'll see my midwife next Tuesday...mainly just for bloodwork. I'll be 5weeks 2days then. I'm seeing a midwife in a hospital, I'd love to go to the Birth Center in Des Moines but it's over an hour away from where I live so thats out...not traveling an hour+ in rush hour traffic while having contractions every 5 (or less) minutes. LOL. The hospital is less than 5 minutes away if you get held up at this one stoplight.

If we have a 3rd child I'm hoping to talk DH into hiring this homebirth midwife I heard about...he wants to have another baby so we know what we're doing better before we have a homebirth.

we've got to figure out what we're doing first. We just had a home birth last August and it cost us 3K...we really don't have the money for it again, but hopefully we can come up with it, since a hospital birth isn't something I want to do for the 1st time with my 4th. I need to use the Law of Attraction to get money to come our way!

Well we're doing another UP/UC, so not seeing anyone for prenatals. BUT I will likely schedule an appt with a MW in a few months for the documentation- helps in getting a birth cert.

The OB that did my D&C in December offered to do an u/s at 8 weeks if I desired. I'm thinking that I'm just going to do what I usually do b/c I don't want to stress myself out with worry. I think I'll go in and see my family practitioner around 10-11 weeks (so we can hear the hb) and then see my midwife around 12 weeks. (I'm planning a homebirth but see my FP for the tests and he's my backup incase I'd have to transfer.)
I think 11 weeks will be the hard time for me since that's when our baby passed and we didn't know it for 4 weeks. I think I'll probably want more frequent hb checks during that time.

I'm toying with the idea of renting a doppler. Anyone ever done this?

Stacie, thanks for saying that! Last year when I was looking for someone my friends just kept saying how silly it was. They just kept saying I didn't really need to know the care provider before I got pregnant. I knew I didn't have to know her, but I wanted someone I felt comfortable with.

Last summer I went to the MW for a complete physical, pap test, and all that jazz. I felt so at ease with her. She didn't rush me during the appointment. She took time to answer questions and didn't make me feel silly with any questions I had for her. The OB/GYN I had previously went to really made me feel nervous, silly, and like I was wasting his time.

It really is a relief to feel I can trust my provider.

I'll be seeing a midwife (birth center) around eight weeks. Since I've not given birth in this area before, I'm still scouting out the few homebirth midwives around here. I really want a homebirth--my last one was so wonderful--but expense is an issue. The birth center here is supposed to be great, and my insurance will cover at least most of that. But we're looking at around $2400 out of pocket for a homebirth.

I'm trying to figure out what I can sell to make the money!

We toured the birth center tonight- There was a mama giving birth while we were there so I feel like I really got a feel for the place- If they hadn't told me whatw as going on I never would have known! It was so calm and peaceful, and I didn't hear a thing! They like to see people as early as possible in pregnancy to discuss nutrition, etc, so I will call tomorrow to make an appointment! The first appointment is 2 hours long.
