Woah, cool!

I have a non-tub shower in our master bath. I've always pictured birthing in it, and this would make it sooooooo great to labor in and push in. I want it! Whaddya think? $35 well spent?

Oh! Oh! Oh! I want one too!!!! I've been wondering where to find one of those, that looks like it could be the perfect birthing chair!!

Thanks so much for posting that!

I HIGHLY recommend a birthing stool to any homebirthin' mama. In fact, my second DD was born on one! :

Make sure and find out the dimensions of the legs and not just the seat. The seat is smaller than the legs will be and you don't want to get it only to find out it won't fit in your tub.

My first thought looking at the picture is the hole is not big enough (designed for washing not birthing). I could be wrong. If I was wanting a product like this I would compare the dimensions to other "birthing stools".

Also keep in mind that when you are pushing you will want your legs soooooo far apart (I was amazed I could even spread like I did!). Is your shower going to be wide enough. Can you squat in it with your feet as far apart as you can get them? As a comparison think about the fact that a bath tub would not be wide enough.

The only thing I would worry about is that the hot water would run out

It sounds fantastic - now I need to stop thinking about it since I just ordered my birth pool and have no $ left.

That would have been perfect for me the last 2 births. My mw had an all metal birthing stool. I didn't like it. But I had to move to the bed to birth the last two cause I was sitting and kept imagining how the baby would be born...how can it come out if I was sitting on my butt? lol I would much rather have stayed seated to birth. I can't afford my own birth stool so this might be a good alternative....If I weren't so close to giving birth. Hmmm maybe I can go look at some drug stores for one.

Those are all good considerations!

My shower is plenty big, I think. It's about 2.5 feet by 4.5 feet. I may have to have the chair facing the wall or the exit side instead of facing the shower or facing away from the shower though.
I was sorta picturing sitting on the edge of the chair. . .so my spread eagle thighs would really be all that's holding me up on it-- my tailbone would be in the U--does this make sense?

Oh good idea! Give your tail bone room to get out of the way and keep pressure off your perineum for the most stretch.

I hope the chair/shower combo works really well for you. I know I really relax in the shower too. Even if you end up changing positions/locations it sounds like it definitely be $35 well spent.

Yes, this makes perfect sense! And when you're done with it, you can give it to your grandma!

Birthing stools are great! And one that could go in the shower...even better.I was on a birthing stool when my gal was born.I was in the dining room though and it was not as comfortable as that one looks.

You could always donate it to your midwife when you're done with it.Spread the birthing chair love!

Cool, I wasn't sure
I started thinking about the hot water running out comment, but then I remembered the reason why I wanted to be naked from 6 cm onward--I was ungodly hot. I think a cool shower may be just fine with me. Hopefully.

Woah! good memory! I am a doula, but an unpracticing one. I never did the stuff to finish my certification, though I did do the births.
That is a preeeety birth stool. I keep birth stool saved as a favorite on ebay so I get emailed when they come up. Sometimes there are nice ones that go for very reasonable prices. I've never actually bought before because I didn't really need one.

My midwife will be bringing an AWESOME birth stool that a dad made. It's definitly not OK for the shower, but it's very comfy. The part your legs go on is adjustable --they swing wider or narrower and they can be tightend easily to stay in place. You can sit backwards or forwards too. very nice.

I would check and see if a local medical supply company has any stools like this instock so you can sit on it and see if you think it will work. I have a friend who is tall and she didn't like the midwife's birth stool until we put it on a room that was one step higher so she could have her feet in the lower room. OTOH, many chairs leave me with my feet dangling above the floor.

I think they had a chair like this in the hospital bathroom when I gave birth to dd1 but they wouldn't let me get in the shower. : I would've loved that. I've since had two waterbirths in the fishy pool, which I highly recommend!
