Ice Cream and Whole-Fat Milk Smooth the Way to Conception

BOSTON, Feb. 28 -- Eating rich ice cream and drinking whole-fat milk, and using heavy cream for coffee, may help reward women shooting for pregnancy, researchers here reported....

I'm not trying to conceive, but saw this article and thought some of you might be interested. I have PCOS and endometriosis and had accepted that I probably would not ever conceive and had never tried to conceive. I now have a 21-month-old son! When I saw this article yesterday my DH and I had a laugh that it must have been the high-fat ice cream kick I was on after some friends had brought it over for a party and I got "hooked." And, fwiw, despite my medical conditions I had always had regular periods, and I should not have been ovulating at the time we did conceive. (I did have the laproscopic surgery five years prior to conception, but never took any medication for my condition after the surgery.)

If I read the article correctly it's also saying that eating low-fat dairy can actually increase your chance of infertility. They recommend eating high-fat dairy to conceive then switching back to low-fat after conception. HTH!

Dh was just telling me this weekend that I needed to switch to no-fat yogurt and milk! The article was well-timed....I was guilt-free when I bought the whole-milk versions yesterday. I can give up grains and sugars, but please don't take away my whole-milk yogurt!

I used to eat ice cream every night and used whole milk on my cereal, but it took injectibles for me to conceive (with an IUI). Now it turns out I'm sensitive to dairy, so I can't eat it anymore. But maybe for one cycle...

More fun for you!

I thought that it was interesting that they were saying that (again, if I read it correctly) that not only did the high-fat dairy help with fertility, but the low-fat seemed to actually hurt fertility. The article got a little "scientific" for me at the end, especially since I'm trying not to conceive, but I just had to read it when I saw the title knowing I'd been on that ice cream kick and then had craved it after conception, as well. I'm just not normally an ice cream eater at all, especially not high fat, but had been eating it every day.

Coincidentally, I read yesterday that the peanut butter recall has now expanded to some peanut and peanut butter ice cream toppings! So, if you have any of those in your pantry throw them out! Or at least take a look at the FDA warning first. I'd hate to offer this advice then have one of you get salmonella from your ice cream topping!

Well, at least you're not eating the low-fat dairy, as it seems that it actually increases your chance of infertility in addition to the high-fat increasing your chance of fertility. I wonder why that is? So, maybe eating no dairy at all is just fine for you.

I saw the little blip aboud PCOS in the article...not enough conclusive data for me to stop my trek to being dairy free. I was a heavy milk drinker 1-2 big glasses a day up until learning that the galactose may be irritating pcos. I also notice that all the women I know that are "fertile myrtles" do not like to drink milk. hmmmm interesting...plus us pcosers have to watch our carbs/sugar intake so unless the no sugar added ice creams come in whole fat milk, we may just be out of luck.
