How did I just find this thread now? In January I decided to get rid of 2007 things in 2007. I don't have my list here at work but I'm at about 300. I'm starting to tackle the garage, so that number will jump!

I just set up three bins in the laundry room. One is for the consignment store, one is for the local food/clothing pantry, and one is for the local crisis pregnancy center. As I fold clean laundry I sort out the stuff I don't want anymore. (Plus a LARGE trash can for stained, holey items.) I've gotten rid of a lot that way, since I don't just stick them in a drawer to deal with later.

Ugh... I was doing so well.... Need to get back on track. I have one pickup load of junk ready to go. Just waiting for dh to take it away. Might load up some more junky lumber today. Cleaned the mule corral a bit yesterday. Does manure count as clutter? Got 3 coat racks installed by the front door, so they're no longer cluttering the top of the fish tank. One kiddie corral out to consignment. Got 3 more curtains hung (thanks for ironing them, mom!), so those aren't cluttering the entertainment center any more. Also offloaded 4 gallons of old paint and one empty drywall mud bucket. Luckily, I think I might have hit the end of the massive mountain of old paperwork. Now I just need a shredder....

ok i have a question about this. first of all, i'm annoyed that i didn't start counting earlier because i've gotten rid of TONS of stuff already!! : anyway, my real question is - what do you count as an item removed? i have tons of paper items, do i count each paper as 1? or each pile? how do i count...what constitutes a whole "1"?

For me, a pile of paper cleared counts as one. A set of matching something counts as one (cups, placemats, socks). Otherwise, each thing is counted individually unless there are too many of them to count and I just give them an arbitrary number based on the space they were taking up in my life.

And I LOVE the 2007 in 2007. That's my new goal if you don't mind me stealing it.

IncaMama, here is my rule of thumb for paper junk--if I have to go through it, as in I have to look at and touch each piece, I count each one. If I can dump a whole pile, then I count it as one. Same thing for bags and boxes. For example, I am returning a bag of toys to a friend this weekend--I am only counting it as one, since I know that it is all hers. If I had to sort it, I would count everything individually. I counted the hours spent doing taxes and financial aid paperwork, as 1 hr= 1 item, and then will count each file folder I create for each task as 1, since it is a unit. Hope that helps!

I signed up at the beginning of the month but haven't posted numbers yet. So far I have gotten rid of some of the kids toys, some clothes, and a huge pile of papers. Today I called my local library to see what types of books they accept. My number so far is 60/300. Hopefully I will get my books sorted for donation within the next couple of weeks.

my goal is 1000...i made it yesterday and i already chunked 252 things...well recycle, toss, goodwill, give away! i didn't know how much stuff i had...i was ready to move into a bigger house...now i'm thinking about downsizing!

Another bag of stuff gone to Freecycle, and finally some papers recycled! I'm also adding in a new category for baby clothes, because I discovered last night that we have waaaaaaay more than needed! New total:

5/7 bags of "stuff" given away

7/10 pairs of shoes given away

20/25 pieces of clothing given away

0/35 pieces of baby clothes given away

2/5 bags of papers to be recycled/shredded

So, all in all, 34/82!

Another 55 items to goodwill, plus a bag of trash out of my daughter's room. Now it's clean enough to paint!
