What can I do with jeans w\ holes in the knee for my girls?

My girls are hard on jeans, I have a lot with holes in the knee. I was thinking of making sorts or capries or skirts- not sure the best way though or if I could use them for anything else. I hate buying so many jeans for them.

If you want to keep them as pants, you could sew cute fabric and rickrack or ribbon over the holes. I always see patchy jeans for kids $20 and more at the store. When I was young, my mother's friend made me a skirt out of jeans. She cut the legs off, leaving as much of the top of the jeans as she could and sewed a length of gathered fabric on the bottom.

If it's a common problem, you should sew in patches to the *inside* as soon as you buy the new pants. You can get iron-on patches at the fabric store or make your own with WonderUnder (I use DH's old jeans as patching fabric). Then sew cute patches on the outside as soon as the holes start. To mend the already-holey ones, put patches on both sides and stitch around them to reinforce. You can make them as pretty as you like, even embroider things on/around them

I made a couple jean skirts just like that for my older dd. I used the legs to make a skirt for my younger dd. The bottom part of the leg had some cool embroidery, so I saved that part for the front of younger dd's skirt. Pretty cool!

With spring coming up, I'd say turn them into capris and then into skirts once summer hits! The leg parts can also be turned into little purses too.

My mom used to repair some of our holey jeans with iron on patches on the inside, and patched on the outside with hearts cut from other old jeans. They looked really cute & the repair was super thick & we outgrew them before they could get holes again.

I've also sewed hearts of different sizes (big one to cover hole in knee, smaller ones around) in a different fabric.

These are all great ideas! My 4 yr old especially, one of my favorite pairs has white embroidery on them I am going to try & fix. I did put the inside patches on my 8 yr olds- I just bought her 5 pair as she out grew hers and she wears a size 10 slim. Hopefully they will last a while. Thanks again, looks like I will be sewing this weekend

I have the same problem with my sons. They're not interested in wearing jean skirts, but I love that idea for my daughters. How difficult is is to make patches? Do they need to be reinforced with anything special or will regular denim work?

thanks for the links ladies!

What I do with my sons (cause our next son is 10 years younger) is cut them up and make denim quilts out of them! The kids all fight over the denim quilts! You can do a denim rag quilt VERY easily and they are so adorable! They make fantastic gifts also!
