Help for 4 month old (sorry, long)

I hope that someone here can help me figure this out. My four month old has had "colic" since he was born. I have tried gas drops (unsuccessfully), gripe water (occasionally helpful), and stomach massage to really no avail. Currently I am on day 10 of TED (I'm eating turkey, lamb, rice, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, green and yellow squash, pears, and pear juice, olive oil, and coconut oil). The diet hasn't seemed to help and I feel so terrible for my poor boy who is obviously in so much pain and I don't know what else to do.

This is a rundown of our typical day, some better, some worse:

Mornings (after we're up) he seems relatively fine, happy even. He'll play happily with his toys in his bouncy seat next to me while I eat breakfast and read email. He'll usually want to nurse about half an hour or so after we get up and he'll linger for quite awhile. During the rest of the morning and afternoon, he's usually pleasant if being held or fed and does not much tollerate being put down for longer than 10-15 minutes. He usually only naps if I am holding him or if we are in the car. Intermittently throughout the day, often after bf, he gets very upset and cries in pain and won't stop until he is either draped over my shoulder and jostled for a bit or carried in what amounts to the kangaroo hold without the sling. Sometimes he passes copious amounts of gas, sometimes not.

Early to mid evening is when things start getting bad (although not consistenly). He wants to nurse constantly and throughout he will sometimes cry and go rigid and won't relax until I do one of the holds previously mentioned. Sometimes he just pulls off the boob and "whines" and then goes back to eating/sucking. He then will have a happy period for an hour or two until he falls asleep, somewhere between 10 and midnight. He'll then sleep for about three-four hours and wake up to eat and then sleep for another two-three and then he'll wake up every 15-30 minutes crying or fussing. Generally the only way to deal with this is roll him over me and switch boobs. He refuses to be burped at night--he only screams.

The other issues are that he only poops every three-four days (which I know can be normal, but his gas is often very fragrant, like there's poop that won't come out) and then sometimes will have a cycle where he'll poop a couple of times a day for two or three days. Lastly, the area around his anus is sometimes BRIGHT red and the mucous membranes are floridly purple and painful looking. It's not diaper rash as it will go away in a matter of hours. Sometimes when he passes gas, he cries, like it hurts coming out.

I personally have suffered from IBS off and on for years and have lots of environmental allergies, but none to foods that I am aware of. The only vax he's received is vitamin K and I had antibiotics after his birth because my membranes were ruptured for more than thirty hours. :

TIA for reading this any for any help that might be offered.

I really don't know too much about this but I've heard dairy (or other foods) can affect babies like this- you eating dairy I mean. I've read a lot of posts with this same problem. Have you tried cutting anything out? I'm sure you'll get a better answer soon- good luck!!!

Have you considered reflux? It can be independent of food allergies. Evan was super intolerant and I couldn't eat potatos or squash and we think he reacted to olive oil. I would make sure you're not using cold pressed.

I could have written your post word for word almost 20 months ago. I also had a colicky infant who behaved precisely as you described. I did the same elimination diet, too, without much success.

When my son was about four months old, I very reluctantly sent him to my mother's house with a few bottles of Alimentum formula. Up until that point, I had been elimination dieting and nursing seemingly constantly. I was exhausted and desperate. I felt like I had an eating disorder. I felt like a bad mom. I didn't understand why I couldn't help my baby feel better.

Surprisingly, after only a day on the Alimentum, my son was a completely different child. My mom called me to report that he had slept through the night for the first time ever! I didn't understand why the Alimentum worked when the elimination dieting didn't until I attempted to switch from Ready-to-feed Alimentum to powdered Alimentum. With the powdered Alimentum, he became miserable again. I compared the ingredients on the two and learned that there was one ingredient different. The powdered version contains corn starch while the ready-to-feed contains tapioca starch.

My son has a corn allergy. The elimination dieting didn't work because corn was cleverly hidden even in some of the foods I ate on my elimination diet. Table salt contains Iodine which is corn derived. Fresh pears and yellow squash are sometimes coated in a wax that is corn derived and the gas drops that I was giving my son were also corn derived. Even the synthetic forms of Vitamin C are corn derived.

I really hope this helps.

Wow, thank you so much. Would scrubbing the skins with baking soda and switching to non iodized salt help me if that's the case here?

I totally feel your pain! I also have a 4 month old, and while he isn't colicky by any means, he does have food allergies. He had blood in his stool and I went on eliminating foods, dairy and soy the strickest. It took a good 4 weeks for the blood to clear, that's how long dairy can be in your system. Maybe you just aren't giving it enough time?

Also, from what you describe, your son's sleeping sounds a lot like mine. He goes to sleep around 7 and sleeps anywhere from 4-6 hours(usually 5) and then he is up every 2-3, then 1-2 after that to nurse. Towards the morning, he always has a lot of gas and squirms and cries a bit getting it out. His doctor said this is because of the non-movement during sleep.

My son's GI recommended taking an enzyme(as did many people on here) and that seems to have helped a lot. You could also try a probiotic.

Good luck!

This has gotten me doing more research and now I'm wondering if I have a corn allergy. My mouth always feels weird after I eat cornbread and I am sensitive to certain adhesives and IVs make feel weird, sluggish and itchy.

Now to find out if Hylands tablets have corn in them...

My dd has a corn allergy. Corn is extremely pervasive. Without a few online helps, I would be totally lost. These guys are great: http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mai...orn%2Fmessages

Also, a few members maintain a blog that keeps track of corn-free foods:

http://corn-freefoods.blogspot.com/

and

http://no-corn.blogspot.com/

Also, this list is helpful, though I've found that other parts of the website are incomplete/inaccurate: http://www.cornallergens.com/list/co...ergen-list.php

Corn is a tricky allergy to identify because it's in everything. When I was doing the elimination diet, I tried cutting out wheat and soy products. They improved my dd's skin a little, but not completely. That's because many soy and wheat products ALSO contain corn. Anyway, we finally found out when dd got skinprick tested by an allergist.

Her skin looks great now and no diarrhea. I'm avoiding corn as well as her (since she's ebf). I probably have a mild corn allergy myself and never really knew it. Good luck.

I'm glad the info is proving useful to you. I don't know about scrubbing the fruit and veggie skins with baking soda. I've never tried it. I usually just peel my son's fruits and vegetables. Switching to sea salt would likely be the best alternative to iodized salt. Also, check the ingredients on the rice you eat. It may be fortified.

Not sure which enzymes, but know for sure that you are looking for a probiotic with Bifidobacterium Infantis. Solarlay Babylife has a dairy free one. Natren Life Starts has one with dairy. You can also order probiotics without any fillers and dairy from customprobiotics.com Solarlay caused dd's eczema to flare even worse and I blame the maltodextrin filler. Not good if you're suspecting corn. Someone on the Healing the Gut thread sugested Genestra brand. Haven't looked into it yet. It might be worth visiting the thread. Lots of mamas there with kids with gut issues.

chiropractic could help.
i've read that chiropractic can help with colic, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, ADD, headaches, migraines... and much more.
my personal experience is that it cured me of my seasonal allergies and migraines.
it just makes sense. the brain is like a computer and has to communicate with the rest of your body. if something is out of alignment, the "message" has to work harder to get to your brain, if it gets there at all.
my dd has been adjusted since she was 2 days old and is very healthy.
