I posted this at TBW and got some great book ideas. I was hoping you guys would have some too. I already love and highly recommend Eragon and Eldest, The Song of Albion trilogy, Narnia, LOTR, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, and now I'm reading The Free Bards by Mercedes Lackey and enjoying that too. Any other ideas?

Diana Wynne-Jones. Patricia C. Wrede. Caroline Stevermere.

Of course, Lackey will be able to hold you for a good month or so.

Anne McCaffery's books, specifically the Dragonrider series, but also the rest of them. Dean Koontz, Graham Hancock, Steve Alten, as well.

I just finished reading with my 7 year old son Magyk and Flyte by Angie Sage... they are a trilogy but she is stil writing number 3... it is very good....

He also really enjoyed the Charlie Bone, Children of the Red King series by Jenny Nenimo?? (can't remember) which was also good and more HPesque because its about magical kids who go to boarding school in England but it has its own charm and unique qualities too (although its not as great as HP IMO )

I also LOVE Terry Pratchet... and have read Dragonrider...

nina kiriki hoffman is another one of my favorites

Books I enjoyed that would be good for similar age group to HP books

Abhorsen series by Garth Nix.

Series of Unfortunate Events

Artemis Fowl series

Eragon and Eldest

Narnia books

LotR

Inkheart and Inkspell (next book is due this year)

His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman (The Golden Compass is coming out as movie in December of this year)

I like Terry Pratchett, he has some books in young adults but I can't think of any offhand that wouldn't be ok.

Wrinkle in Time (a favorite of mine!)

I will read practically anything though. I really like Alison Weir's history books.

Oh

Well, I liked all those books I really liked the Garth Nix books and found them to be unique (which is saying a lot as I have read TONS of fantasy/Sci-Fi)

Neil Gaiman's books are excellent. He is one of my favorite authors. He wrote a book with Terry Pratchett called Good Omens which made me laugh so hard I nearly puked.

Other books for adults who like HP:

I totally agree with Gaiman -- you can't go wrong with him, his books are WONDERFUL
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke
Many Tim Powers (some of his are weak, but try The Anubis Gates, The Stress of Her Regard, or Declare)
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle -- don't be put off by the title, it's such a beautiful book
Faerie Tale, Raymond Feist (this one is fairly disturbing, so be careful if you don't like horror themes)
The War for the Oaks, Emma Bull
Possibly The Magus, John Fowles
I loved The Diamond Age, by Neal Stephenson, until it totally fell apart at the end. Still, it has that Potter sense of endless invention that I really enjoy
And especially -- ANGELA CARTER! Start with the stories in The Bloody Chamber, and among the novels try Wise Children or Nights at the Circus.

Have you read Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy? That's definitely a great starting point.

Other fantasy kid books I enjoy would be The Pullman books, Garth Nix Keys to the Kingdom series (really, really good), The Artemis Fowl books, Narnia, a lot of what's been mentioned here already.

Some other adult books I enjoy are Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, and Esther Freisner's books The Psalms of Herod and The Sword of Mary, I have a penchant for feminist dystopias, .

I second Peter S. Beagle.

I know I read the Earth Sea books a looong time ago, and I think The Dragon Riders of Pern? Seriously, my memory is going.

Tolkien, Lewis...

I read Dean Koontz, Stephen King, and Charles DeLint.

Jules Verne.

I need to read the Eragon books.
