I just finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini...

This book was amazing. Has anyone else read it? If not, you should. I'm up for a little discussion if anyone else is interested.

This was an amazing book. I just finished reading it about a month ago. It was a difficult read for me, though, because of the scenes of violence against children. The whole book gave me a lot to think about in terms of other cultures, effects of war, the victimization of children and much much more. I highly recommend it.

I've picked up the hardback copy to this book many times in the bookshop... I'm too stingy to buy it in hardback. But once it is paperback, I'll definitely be buying it.

Peace

Yes, some parts were heartwrenching. What I think is the most awful is how their lives were changed. I never knew much about Afghanistan or the culture. But reading about how life was before war tore apart their country, you get a sense of yearning for that time again, does that make sense?

And Imogen...I got a paperback copy at Target, I think it was around $9.

I bought one in paperback at Walmart, I passed my copy on to someone and then my sister bought a paperback copy at our local library used book sale for 25 cents.

It is a fantastic book. It really opened my eyes to the horrors of the political uprising in the Middle East 20 years ago. I wish something was done then to stop the violence in those countries....perhaps the war we are fighting now would have been avoided.

so well written

The ending of this book really touched me. Amir and his wife can't have children of their own. Hassan is killed and his son is orphaned and needs a stable family. All seems like it would fit together like a puzzle, or at least it would in a comfy little American dream world. But the reality for them is barely being able to adopt this poor boy who has been beyond abused. Telling the boy they would take him, then telling him they may have to leave him there and come back for him, then finally being able to take him. Sohrab's reaction just seemed soooooooo real. This book was emotionally exhausting for me. I read it two years ago and it still vividly haunts me.

I love how Khalid describes Afghanistan in the pre Taliban era. I love how Hassan helps his mother as an adult.

I remember Oprah doing a show about the Taliban in 2000. I can remember how astounded I was that so many countries would stand by and allow the taliban to rule. Then the 9/11 terrorist acts happened and everyone was suddenly shown how evil the Taliban were/are. I remember Oprah had women from RAWA.org on her show. She also began a campaign for RAWA to have people send them their old cameras and video equipment so that they could document the brutality.

I didn't see that, and I wish I had.....sounds very interesting.
