your favourite cartoons growing up

i did not grow up on cartoons because we still didnt have tv in asia where i gre up.

so i have not really watched much cartoons.

so i am looking for suggestions of 'good' cartoons. cartoons with lots of action and the key being funny like the older tom and jerry cartoons.

my dd LOVES t&j. she is 4 1/2 and doestn mind the violence (t&j kind). she doesnt focus on the violence. seh loves for instance all the effects of whacking like the eyeballs flying out.

recently she watched a 7 minuter of a baby who swallowed the rattle when uncle was watching her and what happens when they go to the hospital. it was a 'ridiculous' cartoon with lots adn lots of exhaggeration and my dd loved it. its called tummy trouble (1989) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO9sqAVosO0 (it is in fast forward mode)

i am quite tired of these dead pan expression, fast moving but not really detailed illustration action, teachable moment cartoons. why arent they silly any longer. why cant they do detailed illustration where every part of the illustration moves rather htan a painting where only some parts of the central chracters move.

so what were your favourite cartoons growing up?

I enjoyed these as a child. Some more than others.

Saturday morning cartoons:

Jonny Quest.

Any LooneyTunes & Merrie Melodies

Tom & Jerry

I hated Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Liked the old Disney movies (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood). Hate the new ones (last 20 years).

I thought I was the only one who lets her kid watch tom & jerry! dh bought the dvds, I was horrified, but when he played them I remembered how much I loved them as a kid too. the music is great!

(I haven't told any of the other moms @ preschool...thanks for letting me know that i'm not alone!)

Scooby Doo was the best! I am so happy that my older son is as obsessed with Scooby as I was. Pirate ghosts, ahoy

i personally feel its an age thing. initially as toddlers its a copy thing (though personalities might guide this too) so u hit others as u see the cartoons. but i think i lifted my parental control at 3 1/2 when i found she was enjoying the storyline and imagination thing rather than acting out what they were doing.

i allow her to watch a lot of cartoons other moms dont let their kids watch - like ninja turtles, all those animes like teen titans, pokemon and others i dont even remember teh name of. its because my dd gets something different out of them and raises some interesting questions rather than act them out. she is so into saving the world.

I agree that most things are ok if they lead to meaningful dialogue.

except commercials... I try to keep him away from them because I don't trust in my ability to out-argue the marketers. We don't even watch sesame street on pbs because of the big fat mcdonalds commercial at the beginning.

I remember those ... as well as Touché Turtle, Wally Gator, Quickdraw McGraw (and of course El KaBong), Ricochet Rabbit and Secret Squirrell ... but the ones I really was raised on were Tom & Jerry, the Tex Avery Screwballs (Droopy Dog and the like), and of course the Looney Toons and Merrie Melodies pre-about-1955-ish.

Those are the ones that I remember the most from my childhood because my Mom made it a point to expose us to these cartoons and appreciate them not only for the fun that they are, but also as an expression of an era, i.e. the references to 40s movie stars (I think I was the only 5th grader who knew who Humphrey Bogart was and about his "less-than-perfect" (said sarcastically) relationship with Lauren Bacall), the parodies of 40s film, and the brilliance of the animation.

These, along with the works of the Marx Brothers, and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby (in the "Road" pictures) are the things that I will be exposing DS to and teaching him about the history behind them when he is old enough (probably between 8 and 10).

What was "less than perfect" about it?
Really. Am trying to figure out what you mean.

And BTW was a fan of the original Bugs Bunny cartoons as a kid. Still am.

My understanding was that he was abusive.

All the Disney one's in sapphire_chan's clicky link.

I also liked the older cartoons (at least for me they were before my time)

Top Cat
Secret Squirrel
Atom Ant
Mighty Mouse
Scooby Doo (none of this new stuff)
The Smurfs
The Flintstones
The Jetsons
Speed Racer
Underdog
Johnny Quest

The Snorks were fun and from my time. I could probably go on. I used to watch a lot of cartoons as a kid. When I was younger I used to get up between 12 & 3 am (naturally) and wouldn't be able to go back to sleep so I used to put on Cartoon Network and watch cartoons until it was time for me to get ready for school. In the middle of the night was when a lot of the older cartoons were played.

Never heard any such thing. And in my before-times was kind of a Bogie-buff. Along with Laurence Olivier. (Don't ask. ) So read a lot about him ... but never that.

I loved:

Tom & Jerry
The Littles
Duck Tales
Smurfs
ThunderCats
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
She-ra
Rescue Rangers
Woody Woodpecker
Heckle & Jeckle
The Jetsons
The Flintstones
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Loved Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes. They have forever altered how I view certain classis songs and stories though! Barber of Seville, Tristan and Isolde (Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit), The Scarlet Pumpernickel (Pimpernel)etc.

My sis and I also loved "Godzilla", it was so bad it was hilarious. Godzilla would come out of the ocean and be standing knee deep, fight the monster and then dive right back in. WHAT was he standing on? Where did Godzuki come from and why could he fly? I don't remember seeing any Shezillas on the show! And why did Godzilla help people instead of munch on them? And how in the world did he understand English?
