I have no idea about handpainted wool, but I like finding nice old sweaters at thrift stores and making those into longies and soakers. There are a few patterns for recycled sweater longies/shorties in the diaper pattern/resources sticky above.

I watch etsy.com for nice hand dyed wool, also diaperswappers has some in the craft section sometimes, I have found some locally at craft fairs, and our local yarn shop carries Lorna's Laces hand dyed but it is REALLY expensive compared to buying it local or off of etsy/diaperswapper. You can also get it off of ebay but be careful some of the vendors on ebay are selling wool dyed out of country and that makes me a bit nervous, especially when they won't tell me the types of dyes used - on estsy and diaperswappers most sellers will tell you what type of dye they use and most sellers are from US/Canada where our non-toxic guidelines are a little more rigorous.

My favorite longie pattern so far for knitting is the Little Turtle Knits pattern (her pull on ribby soaker and her ribby wrap are great as well) it uses short rows so the shaping seems to work well. For free patterns the one from tiny bird organics is nice and well written, the shaping isn't as nice in that pattern though. Take all of this with a grain of salt when it comes to shaping because my longie wearer won't be here for hopefully another 6 weeks. But I've knit up a few and so far just looking at them the LTK is definately by far my favorite, her pattern is very well written and has a lot of room for personalization.

ETA: So far my favorite is Treslike organic merino in natural that I plan on kool-aid dying soon. I have also made some longies from berrocco 50/50 wool alpaca blend (very soft), and galloway (very soft once washed and lanolized) both are really nice, but the merino is just so soft. The merino is pretty pricey though so I only have a pair of small longies in that. I also have on deck some cascade 220 and some local organic wool to make some more soakers/wraps or longies from...who knows what will come of the needles in the next few weeks!

there are a few mama's on hyena cart that do hand dyed wool. I am stalking a skien today ;-)

I have only used the cheap 100% wool from the local store, but am dying to try BFL and targhee

I dont know if you are looking for knit, or crochet, but for crochet patterns, i have tried dandelion dreamers and ladybugz farms patterns. I prefer the ladybugz Morning glory flared longies, they are way cute and easy to make.
