cleaning a shower curtain liner

How do you clean your shower curtain liner? I read somewhere to try the washing machine. So I tried that and our big beast of a machine tore it up. Last time I resorted to throwing it out and getting another one. There must be a better way???

The first time attempted to clean it I took it outside and hung it up on the clothesline, washed it off with a wet soapy rag, then hosed it off. Since then I've been putting it in the washer.

I wash ours with a few towels and hot water.

Comes out perfect.

Washer on delicate.

If you get the polyester or nylon ones, they don't rip in the washer.

I have a vinyl one that we wash every couple of months, and hang to dry.

Hot water, the rugs from same bath, and a touch of soap.

hang to dry.

Hmm, I take mine down and soak it in the bathtub with bleach water, and kind of swish it around a little bit. Maybe take the bathroom sponge to some spots on it that need it. Then I just rinse it off, hang it back up, and open the bathroom window to help it dry out faster.

I put mine in the washer. No tears but the pattern is coming off. If I scrub too hard it comes off as well.

I must just have the destroyer of all washing machines. It really ripped mine up last time. Its 20 years old and big-and really rough on our clothes too. Maybe I'll have to try hosing it outside.

We put ours in the machine with towels. I just read somewhere to use lemon oil (eek, i'm 99% sure it was lemon oil) to clean soap scum off shower walls. That might work on the shower curtain as well. Maybe in a spray bottle?

My shower curtain liner is plastic and I know lemon oil eats plastic. Maybe if it was dilute enough. BUT I had never thought of that for my shower walls-I am going to try it. I bet is smells so nice.

Yup, the poly ones rock and I wash it at least once a month in the washer with no problems. And it comes really, really clean.

That is so funny, I was just thinking, "Erin will know the answer to this question." And there it is!

I have a clear vinyl curtain that I trimmed up to protect the windowsill in our shower, and a polyester curtain liner for our actual curtain, and I put both in the washing machine (I have a front loader, tho). Hang to dry.
I think it would be worth it to invest in a fabric liner when your old curtain gets worn out, because it is so much easier than having to scrub a vinyl one, and it doesn't smell all plasticy when it's new. The washing in the bathtub idea is a good one in the meantime!

I wash mine in the washer, on delicate, then hang it back up on the shower fresh from the washer.

I CANNOT stand the smell of new vinyl- it literally makes me sick. So I'll need to keep on re-using the one I already have (it came with the house) until it's completely unusable and then either get somebody else's hand-me-down vinyl shower curtain liner or a non-vinyl one.

I wash mine in the washing machine with baking soda and with towels and/or bathroom mats. Are you washing your liner with other things or on its own?

I bought a cloth (poly or nylon or something) liner at least 5 years ago. It still look new. It doesn't stick to wet skin when you touch it. It washes easily, but rarely needs to be washed (doesn't harbor mildew). In other words, well worth the $20 or so that it cost.

My recommendation it to toss the plastic liner and get a fabric one.

Put a vinegar and water solution in your tub, put the (I'm assuming vinyl) liner in the tub, and do a little dance on top of the liner. Kinda like you're in Italy, crushing grapes to make wine. Work off some calories, get a clean shower curtain liner. It's a win-win situation! (Rinse the liner when you're done stomping/dancing.)

Hmmm polyester or nylon is sounding like the way to go. I don't think I've seen them before-where would I find them?

I clean mine in the bath tub like this. Last time I used Tide, but next time I will try vinegar and baking soda.
