Softening up sheets without fabric softener?

Thread Starter
I bought these sheets at Target for my DD's bed, and I should have known better. They were on clearance for $10 and felt soft enough in the package, but after washing all the chemicals out, I discovered that these are the roughest sheets I've ever experienced. Is there any way to soften them up without fabric softener (which I don't own and refuse to buy )?

TIA!

Nellie's Dryer Balls http://store.greenfeet.com/itemdesc....2D00076%2D0000

More info: http://nellieslaundry.com/Dryerballs.html (you can't buy here though)

I just got mine and they really do live up to their advertising!

It really depends on the thread count as to how soft they will end up being as well as how long they will "last" which thread count are they? I use vinegar in all my laundry, I put it in the fabric softener dispenser.

Here to echo the above post, and to add that if you liberally dose your white vinegar with an essential oil (I like lavendar), your sheets will smell like heaven. If you do this and then line dry outdoors, your sheets will smell like seventh heaven.

Maybe if you put them in the dryer with a tennis ball (or something of similar weight) it might soften them up.
