I became obsessive about washing my face many times a day and would even clock the amount of time I was spending washing. All that happened was that my face became raw and irritated, in addition to breaking out at times.

The bottom line is that I agree with DavinaT -- acne is a response to hormonal change and is probably not caused in most cases by lack of cleanliness. I also think that there's a lot of evidence disproving the idea that a "bad diet" causes acne.
I did the same thing with over washing, but I disagree about the diet. The things in the diet to watch for have changed, but anything toxic or processed is hard on your liver and the liver's response to stress in skin disorders. The liver also has a lot to do with processing hormones. So, teens are definitely going to have a harder time with acne. I still have acne and I try really hard to keep my face gently clean and avoid crap, but I am on meds that I need to take and I think it contributes to my acne. There are natural supplements designed specifically for male/female hormone balancing which may also help

DD1 uses soap with tea tree oil in it to wash her face, I think twice a day. (It's not like she still needs my help with washing up!) She also uses straight tea tree oil on any pimples that pop up anyway.

This combination works well for her, so we never investigated any alternatives. DD2 doesn't yet need to worry about this, but she already knows what her older sister uses.

I researched this a bit when my face was breaking out particularly badly, and I purchased chasteberry. I am scared to take it myself, because of the possible triggering effects on breast cancer, but I am wondering if it might help my ds. Has anyone given this supplement to a teen?
