non-toxic mattresses without breaking the bank

My dd is going to have a new bed soon. I am not bringing a conventional mattress into this house. But an organic mattress is big $$$. I found an organic cotton, wool and rubber futon for around $700. Still lots of money. I am considering a non-organic futon, but wouldn't they still be treated with lots of really yucky stuff? Is anything that IKEA offers less toxic? Does anyone know of a better price on any of the above? HELP!!! $700 will take us SEVEN months to save for!!!!!

I don't know where you live, but it may be worth checking into.

Here, there is a futon maker who's futons are cotton and foam. I don't imagine that is is organic, but there's not a lot of nasty off-gassing stuff.

He makes them by hand, and we bought a king-size for $400 or $500.

Maybe you could call around.

Look into Ikea. They've recently committed to using only natural non off-gassing materials in their products. And though it might not state it on their website, if you call the phone number for placing orders, they can tell you if they are able to ship product to areas not served by a brick and mortar store. I was able to get several flat pack bookshelves sent for a flat fee of 98 dollars. That was three years ago.. but its certianly worth asking the questions.

Lifekind still has their yearly mattress sale going on. You may want to check with them. You have to call to get price quotes because they like to ask you some questions to figure out which one will best suit your situation. They sell mattresses and futons. Someday I want one of their mattress, when we can affored it. www.lifekind.com I think they had a queen size mattress for about $350. That does not include box springs. So, the futon would be much cheaper and a twin or full would have to be cheaper. I would check with them and get some price quotes.

Thanks, folks! I think I will wait a bit and try Ikea first. Someone told me that the fire retardant standards are going to be even stronger very soon, so of course that means even more chemicals...

We bought my 3 1/2 year old son a twin size mattress from IKEA two months ago and have been very happy with it. They don't use any fire retardant chemicals in their mattresses, which is what I was looking for since my son has eczema. We bought him a spring mattress and it was around $225 I think (don't quote me on that though ). We got the second one down from the top of the line I think (it has separate pocketed coils).

I am looking into new bedding right now too, I love what they have on
white lotus futons, and they are about half of what you have been quoted, even thier non-organic is still green, no ADDED stuff.
