If I like these bands...I might like these ones?

Trying to find some new music. Here are some musicians/bands that I like.

David Byrne
Sondre Lerche
Jack Johnson
Gorillaz
Toots and the Maytals
Modest Mouse
Hepcat
Citizen Cope
The Shins
Ozomatli
Gypsy Kings
Ricardo Lemvo
Descendents/All/Goodbye Harry
Stiff Little Fingers
Kirsty McColl
Lou Reed

Forgot to mention G. Love and Gnarls Barkley

..and many more, but you get the idea, I hope. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I love this idea for a thread!

If you like the Gypsy Kings, you might like Radio Tarifa -- they're a Spanish band that fuses a lot of North African sounds into their music, I highly recommend them.

If you like Lou Reed as a solo songwriter, you might like Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, or Leonard Cohen. If you like him as part of the Velvet Underground, you might like Nick Cave. I know none of these are particularly obscure and you might already be into them (or hate them, or whatever).

A stretch recommendation -- if you like Kirsty Maccoll, you might possibly like the Frames DC.

If you love Jack Johnson, I'm almost certain you will love Donvavon Frankenrieiter. He is a friend of Jack Johnson and they sound remarkably alike. Check out Spearhead. Also check out Iron and Wine.

I like this thread idea, too. I don't know many of the bands/artists you listed, so I am of no help in that arena. However, check out this site:

http://www.pandora.com

You type in who you like and it mathematically tells you who else you might like. You have to register after two uses, but I don't know if it's free or not. I didn't register.

I'm registered with Pandora, and it's free-free-free.

I like Jack Johnson a ton! I lump these bands in the same category (not entirely sure why exactly, my mind just categorizes them together! ):

G Love and Special Sauce
Tristan Prettyman
Ben Harper
Hootie and the Blowfish (I never really loved them before, but I'm coming around and for some reason they've been lumped into this category)

I think they all remind me of summer time

Lily Allen, Tom Waits, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Gogol Bordello, Kaiser Chiefs, Clinic.

For some reason, those just come to mind.

If you like modern rock, a local-to-me radio station plays a lot of the bands you mentioned, especially during the day. They stream online.

Incidentally, there's also Last.fm, which is of a simliar setup. It's not flash based as Pandora is, but I like it better because the application integrates with some standard applications and so can be run stand alone to play related stuff or it can also send the data back to the site to log what, of your own libray, you've been listening to. Which is kind of cool as it proivides a better picture of what you're tastes are in music.

Here are my recommendations--
sufjan stevens
Bloc Party
The Arcade Fire
Franz Ferdinand
The Slackers (I could recommend a lot of ska, but you'd have to dig a bit)
Aqualung
Kaiser Chiefs
Bright Eyes
The Postal Service

Just a few off the top of my head.

i hardly know or like a thing that's been mentioned on this thread so far but Pandora is all kinds of cool!! thx!!

OMG, I am loving the Pandora site!
I was just coming to recommend Pandora, but I see I've been beaten to the punch.

Just in case anybody using it hasn't noticed, you can "seed" your existing stations with addition artists/songs, if you want to refine things a little.

Try Bedouin Soundclash
If you like Modest Mouse you will love Built to Spill...

Some of my favorites!

Medeski Martin and Wood...? Ever listened to them? All of my music gets rotated - and this is what I just so happen to be stuck on lately. Just saw them last week too. :

I'm just getting back to this thread. I'll have to look into Pandora, as well as some of the bands/musicians mentioned. Some sound familiar and I'm sure I've heard a few of their songs on my local independent radio station. For those that recommended G Love, I certainly do like him, just forgot to put him on that list!

Oh, man, I was just going to pimp Pandora! Awesome stuff.

David Byrne
maybe Television, maybe Oingo Boingo?

Gorillaz
Gnarls Barkley?

Ozomatli
Mana, or some old obscure Santana?

Gipsy Kings
Someone already said Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Also try The Bad Plus. Maybe Bozzio/Levin/Stevens, too, but that might be a little more prog and a little less latin than you're after.

Kirsty McColl
LOVE HER! Check out Mary Prankster, they remind me of each other. Also Myshkin's Ruby Warblers.

Lou Reed
Who DIDN'T he influence! Are you up on all your VU homework? If not, dig into their catalog, at least the Lou years. Also, this sounds odd, but if you're a fan of Lou's solo work, maybe try Joe Jackson. Also look to early R.E.M.
