Velour Question

Hello, this is my first post on here but I'm in dire need of some advice.
I'm in the middle of making some pocket diapers. Well, I found some velour material that I though would work for the inners (I had read about someone using velour for their inners) and went ahead and cut it up. Well then I read about COTTON velour and POLYESTER velour, and it got me wondering which one I had so I did the burn test and it's the polyester velour . So my question is, this won't work for my inners, will it? If not, will it work for my outers? Also, what would you recommend for inners that doesn't ravel? Thanks in advance!

ETA: Hancock has some fabrics on sale but I'm not sure if they would work for the inners or not. Would Suede Fabric work? I've heard of suede cloth but I'm not sure if this is the same thing... Also, they have Micro Bubble Fleece. It's under the micro fleece category, so would this work?

bumping for advice/opinions

I've only used microfleece (not sure about the bubble part) and suedecloth for my pocket inners. If you want to make a pocket diaper, you will probably want the outer layer to be a waterproof fabric such as PUL or fleece (not microfleece) and the inner fabric to be some sort of stay-dry fabric, usually a polyester fabric such as microfleece or suedecloth. I'm not sure how polyester velour will work, but you could always just give it a try. If you are looking for the outer to be waterproof, the velour definitely won't work. Then you will want to stuff the diaper with an absorbent fabrics such as microfiber, terry, hemp, etc. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I had originally planned on using fleece for my outer anyways, but when I saw the velour was polyester, I thought it wouldn't work for my inner, but maybe for my outer. I put water on it and it rolled off, does that mean it will just roll right out of the sides of the legs when it's on baby (if it's on the inside)? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, I'm new to this and have no baby yet to test it on!

ETA: If it helps to explain, it's a thicker feeling velour. Could this maybe be why it's rolling off like that? I really hope I don't have to scrap it .

Just wanted to add that I put a towel underneath the velour, poured some water on it and it didn't immediately soak in but when I pressed on it (it meaning the water on the velour) with my hand, the wetness went through to the towel. So, does that mean I can use it for an inner on my pocket dipe still (with a stuffer, of course)? Or will it not work since it doesn't immediately soak through? : Bah, I think I'm confusing myself... Darn pregnancy brain...

I would say that it's usable. The real test is when it's on baby. When baby is sitting or standing, the diaper and fabric will be compressed, so if compressing it causes it to absorb it should work. I think.

^That's along the lines of what I was thinking. Yay!! I really didn't want to scrap it, especially since I had already cut all my pieces out. I will definetely be more careful next time, though...

IIRC you can also hand strip the velour by washing it in warm water with a teeny bit of Dawn and scrubbing at it in the sink with your hands to get the oils and such out and open the fibers. That might make it wick faster.

Wow, I hadn't even thought that it might need stripping! Cool, I'll try that and see if it helps a little. Thanks so much for the advice!!!

It Worked!!!

Yay! I just got done stripping the velour, then dried it. I poured some water on it (with a towel underneath) and it went right through! THANK YOU, thank you, thank you!!!! (Am I weird to be this excited? Oh well, I don't mind being weird...)

I get excited like that when I find a new trick that works, too!

I'm glad it helped
