Vitamins?

What vitamins, if any, do you take daily?

I am kind of confused by the overwhelming amount of vitamins/natural supplements at the local natural food store.......

I recently started seeing a holistic MD, and asked her to prescribe some vitamins for me. I had been on about 3 years worth of Rx prenatals, and figured I'd just keep going with something high quality. She told me that she really didn't want me to take vitamins--I needed to get my RDA from healthy foods, so that my body would correctly assimilate the nutrients to match my body's needs. So many vitamins out there are showing signs that taking them outside of food sources can actually do a lot more harm than good for your body.

I went with her advice, I don't see any negative effects to my health, and it forces me to concentrate on getting the right nutrients in my diet. (Before, I'd just say, "Enh, I take a multi-vitamin...that ought to be enough," and I was wrong.) The only thing I am taking right now is a flax seed oil supplement, and I understand even that isn't as good as it could be. Fish oil would be a better way to get my Omega nutrients.

You might also check out the Health boards for more information. Good luck!

I take a whole foods supplement. I use Juice Plus per the recommendation of my chiropractor, but I know that there are others out there. As far as diet goes, I do my best to eat healthy and pretend that I'm not taking the Juice Plus (i.e., I don't "depend" on it), but the fact is I don't always get everything that I need and I consider this the next best thing. I also give it to my kids (chewable version), which makes me feel less hurried about training them to eat green stuff (I'm working on them, but they can't possibly be getting enough right now).

I also take fish oil (for omega 3s) and evening primrose oil (for PMS; jury is still out on whether that really helps or not). The only isolated supplements I take are iron (because I have insanely heavy periods) and vitamin C (as an immune system booster; I'm considering stopping that since I eat a lot of grapefruit, but for some reason it makes me feel secure, so I haven't).
