I think I may have fallen into doing elimination communication with my nearly one year old son.
I'd read all about EC a long time ago, but didn't think it was for us and didn't try. I did choose to cloth diaper with prefolds, though, so my son could stay in connection with his eliminations. When my son was about 10 months old, we had a frustrating problem. Any time my husband or I left DS without a diaper, he would joyously pee and then have fun stomping in the puddle.
Our initial response to this problem was to just keep DS in a diaper constantly. But one day when he was about 11 months old, on a whim, I decided to stand him nakey-butt in the bathtub, and see if he would pee there. He thought about it for about five seconds, and then peed! Every single time I've stood him in the tub since (several weeks now) he has peed. So now at every diaper change (every 1 to 2 hours), first thing in the morning, and after every nap, I stand him in the bathtub and he pees. Every time. I'm flabbergasted. I never did believe that crap about toddlers having no control over their bladder, but it still astounds me to see this in action.
Anyway, DS has been having dry naps for several days, and his nighttime diapers were getting dryer and dryer. He woke up with a dry diaper this morning after 10 hours of sleep. He's also sleeping better at night. He went from waking every 2 hours to nurse to sleeping 5 hours straight last night. He hadn't done that since he was a newborn.
This kid loves to pee. The first few times he peed in the tub, he did a little dance and looked up at me with a giant grin on his face, as if to say, "Wow, mom, look what I can do!" We're working on not stomping in the puddle.
He will even potty for daddy, too. I love that I know DS is always going into a clean diaper with an empty bladder now, so he stays dry longer and isn't sitting in a wet diaper anymore (he has always been a 'pees every 20 minutes' kind of kid).
Where do I go from here? He's turning one this week. I've been trying to keep this low key, because he does get frustrated if I take him to go potty too soon after the last time. I'm teaching him the sign for potty by signing it every time he goes, and we say, "Go potty?" before he goes, and "Yay potty!" when he goes. I've thought about introducing a potty chair to the bathtub to see if he will use that. We're working on catching poos in the big potty. He's gone three times so far, and doesn't mind pooping there, but it takes serendipitous timing on my part to get him there at just the right moment.
