Teen May Drop Out - Page 2

I didn't get a chance to read the other posts, but as a person who dropped out because I was "giving up", I would have to say that I think it depends on why the child doesn't want to go to highschool.

I think there is a big difference in wanting a different type of learning experience, and simply running from your problems. I ran from my problems instead of dealing with them, which wasn't healthy, and I paid a price for that.

'opting out' was the best thing I could've done for myself. I deschooled (sorely needed) and had the option to go to college (I went a year or so, then started working in my vocation) I am doing very well and don't regret a thing

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Can someone explain what deschooling is?
deschooling is a pause, allowing the damages of the school experience to clear away, sometimes in preperation for homeschooling or unschooling. In my case is was important because I went from a small private school to a huge public one and suffered as a result, being crammed with work, there was no time for anything else. I needed to decompress, which is a good way to describe deschooling (decompressing)

I'm POSITIVE that someone else can provide a more thorough description as it's early and my mind has yet to wake up

I have a friend whose son did not finish high school, due to a sort of "school phobia". he is finishing high school to get a diploma on line! I don't know the details, but I think that is pretty cool!
