Tell me about raw milk in a dairy sensitive kid?

Tell me about raw milk in a dairy sensitive kid? We buy organic cow's milk from Whole Foods currently. My DS has a really hard time tolerating it and it gives him bad gas etc. Would raw milk be better for him? What are the benefits?

TIA from a newbie at this

It depends on what he is sensitive to. Is he lactose intolerant (meaning he lacks the enzyme lactase that digests the milk sugar lactose)? If so ( and from the symptom picture you describe that may be it) then raw milk might very well be the answer. My dh is lactose intolerant and can eat any raw dairy just fine...no gas, diarrhea any thing! Raw milk contains the enzyme lactase, but it is killed by pasturization.
However, if your child is allergic to the milk protein casein, ( meaning the casein causes a system-wide immune response that can manifest in many different ways, from GI symptoms, to sniffles, to sleeplessness, to mood, to musculo skeletal things) then raw milk is still going to cause that response.

If you dont know wich one you son has, I would try raw milk and see what happens

Hope that helps

Thanks.

He can eat yogurt and cheese without any problems so I don't think the casein is the problem. He just becomes very uncomfortable and sick after drinking cow's milk.

i agree with Tanya. My ds is allergic to the casein(rash, irritabilty ect) and he can't even tolerate raw cow milk. But he can have goats.

ds gets a rash if he drinks pasturized. He does not if he drinks raw

My oldest daughter is allergic to pasteurized milk (breaks out in hives if she gets enough of it) but can tolerate raw milk with no problems at all.

I also tend to get more congested (than usual) and find my joints are achier (achey-er?) (than usual) if I drink pasteurized but I don't notice any appreciable change for the negative with the raw milk.

Neither of those sound like lactose intolerance (gastro-intestinally fine) to me, but nor do they sound like the casein allergy... go figure!

What kind of sick? If he did have any gut issues or blockage, raw milk can actually be upsetting also the first few times or even until his body adjust to the natural bacteria. I know when we first started, ds's poops were very very soft, almost like a baby! it can really be a shock to th ebody if you aren't used to consuming it.

if he really does keep feeling th esame way though- kefir is always a good option. My ds tolerates kefir very well.

When milk is raw, all the bacteria nessecary for digesting it are present. In pasturized milk, they have all been killed, so you body essentially is left defenseless.

He gets really gassy and bloated after drinking cow's milk and occasionally gets diarrhea after drinking it.

I experience the saem symptoms after drinking normal milk. I would try raw, I am sure it will be much better. Initially, the stool may be looser. But I would give it a try anyway. Ds does wonderful on raw even though he breaks out in a rash with normal. And given that it can be hard to get any good nutrition in him consistantly, I really rely on raw milk sometimes!

That's how DD was with pasteurized cows milk. Yogurt and cheese were fine, but she would get diarrhea from straight pasteurized milk.

It took a little while to transition her to raw cows milk, but now she is doing very well on it (and enjoying it!). So it definitely sounds like there's a chance your DS can do well with raw cows milk... but it may take time to transition, and the transition should be slow.

We had been giving DD oat milk instead of cows milk (1 cup/day at breakfast) and what we did was slowly change out some of the oat milk for raw cows milk. We're now at 75% raw milk/25% oat milk and she's doing very well with it.

I grew up on a homestead and had nothing but raw milk until I was fourteen. When we moved off the farm and started drinking store bought milk, I started having serious problems with eczema and the like.

Don't know the hows and whys of it but it was just my experience and since selling raw milk is illegal in my state, I don't use milk much.
