Here is our room. I am so excited, it is finally coming along. This room is right off the kitchen and formerly was home to a HUGE t.v. and futon. It was great for me to watch t.v. while cooking and not have to fight DH over the tv in the living room. But now with our son being older I really wanted to tv out (we are finally down to just one tv in the house from three!) and to have a space he could enjoy. Okay, maybe I enjoy it too. It is so calm.

With the money from the tv we sold I bought the playstands and from the futon I sold I bought the kitchen. Both from Willow Toys. I would like to paint and sew some new curtains. And I am waiting for the play silk for the canopy (which isn't put together yet in the photo). I'll add more photos later once I get it all finished.

VeganLove, the light in your play area is just lovely!

Okay, FINALLY, pictures of our playroom!!!! The room is actually a sunroom directly off of the dining room. I pulled up the carpet in the dining room & left it in the playroom for comfort. I painted the walls a wonderful yellowish green. It gets lots and lots of light; in fact, the windows are not white, as in the pix, that is just how sunny it was outside (guess the camera couldnt handle it, lol!).

Here is the playroom in order. The rug is actually a baby blanket that I made that I call the Ugly Couch Blanket, haha. Kitchen area is to the left, play shelf (from Ikea) in the middle, playstand to the right. We have one playstand (Camden Rose stand, Plum Pudding canopy), it is set up to be like a little hidey-hole against the wall until dd gets older and has her own ideas about it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twelve50fty/3893215689/

Here is the kitchen area. DD is supposed to get a play kitchen for Christmas: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twelve50fty/3893216419/

Toy shelf. Some kitchen stuff on top, stuffed animals to the left, books to the right. My mom collects Longaberger basket for dd, lol: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twelve50fty/3893216953/

Behind the playstand. Would be a better pic, but this is as far as I could back up w/ the wall behind me. Baby doll basket and wooden figures are usually on these shelves: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twelve50fty/3894002778/

NOW that you have seen the room all nicey-nice, HERE is what it actually usually looks like!: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twelve50fty/3894003416/

I do move some things around occasionally, but for the most part, this is how it is organized. I am about to go thru and clear out some kitchen things and other toys from the shelves b/c there are too many right now. DD also just got a couple new things (toys and baskets) from family, so I need to rotate to make room for those. I do rotate some toys regularly which works well. I have to *seriously* control myself or I would buy lots and lots of toys. I already have all of her xmas toys in a box and I am about to buy a few new things for right now, eeee!! I just love toys!!! Oh, she also has a *few* (v few) more toys in her room, but truthfully, that room's toys are almost entirely books.

I was curious if anyone would be so kind to share pictures of play areas they have for older children, say a 5 1/2 years. I really need inspiration!!!
Granted, my son isn't quite 3, but the playroom I set up (and what I see lots of others doing) is pretty much what I expect it to be as long as he likes toys...through 7 yrs at least. We're adding a castle set over Christmas and we've got trains and puzzles in other parts of the house...but basically this is it. When we move, I plan to set up something pretty similar, but maybe send the train table with the farm stuff and trains to his dad's. That way I know he has good things to play with. And it will be a visual reminder to resist adding battery powered stuff.

As DS gets older, I anticipate maybe adding slightly to his toys---dress-up stuff perhaps, but really, this is it.

What kind of things did you have in mind that would be different for a 5-1/2 yr old vs a 2-1/2 yr old?

well, we still have out toys from her younger years because they are so versatile and multi-functional (blocks, nesting bowls, stacking toys, musical instruments, play silks). We also have baskets of pine cones, acorns, pieces of wood, beach rocks, shells, polished stones, found rocks, wool balls & eggs. Along the way, we added a kitchen set, dress-up clothes, cash register, scale, wooden and wool animals/people. (Up stairs, we have a dollhouse, a doll corner, and a reading area. We also have craft stuff and a nature table close to the play area).

Now that playing store has become the thing to do, we need to have at least one shelf empty on the playstands to set up shop. I also just moved her kitchen set out from between the playstand, so that has freed up a wall. And I am searching for some inspiration.

I was thinking of putting a long shelf up with a coat rack below. I was going to hang her playsilks on the rack and display some of her toys on the shelf. I think this would be more aesthetic. I was also thinking of making something like this
It would need to be more wide than deep for our area. I'll have to take a pic of what we have.

To the OP - I love your playroom! That playstand playsilk is great - did you make it yourself? I also really love the house thing with all the playsilks clipped to it. What a fantastic idea! I know my girls would love something like that.
Where did you get your dress up rack? That thing is awesome!!

Aww, thank you! We have a much more modest playspace now that we've moved (and have 2 boys to consider!). I think I have pics of that space on here somewhere though!
