Anyone thinking about diapers yet?

Thread Starter
Not sure what I want to do this time around. . For DS1 I tried everything, and then ended up with FBs. For DS2, started off with lots of cute fitteds, Kissaluvs and wool, then ended up with pockets as I had two in diapers and it was just easier. This time around part of me wants to get everything I have ever wanted to try, as I know this is the last baby for us, but the other part me wants to just go with bumGenuis or something, as I know things will be super hectic with three under 4! Any one else thinking about diapers?

I am. We started CDing my DD pretty late. I also started with a variety and ended up with FBs. While the FBs are easier, I am also thinking of trying something else.

I liked my fitteds and PFs, but I hated how bulky they were under clothes. I am not really sure what I am going to do.

We use prefolds and covers during the day around the house, and the onesize bumGenius pocket dipe for outings and nighttime.

That works well for my DD. I'm hoping it works well for our new bundle as well! I actually just ordered some infant prefolds and small Proraps from a co-op on the Christian mom's forum.

We are doing fitteds(kl0) and pockets(fb & hh) to start off with.

I think we will do Kissaluvs(ds old ones) and prefolds (those are new to me) for the early weeks. ds is in motherease and Happy Heiny's now and I like it that way. ME for around the house and HH for outings, so the new bean will end up in those when he/she reaches medium size.

I am. Not by type or anything yet, but I definitely want to CD. Since this is my first and I haven't changed a cloth diaper in 15 years at least, I don't really know what's out there yet.

This is my first too and the choices for CD seem overwhelming. Is it better to get an assortment and find out what you like OR just get a bunch of one kind that sounds the best for the sake of consistency? I don't sew so I won't be making my own. I've done a little research and it seems like pocket diapers are a good compromise between all-in-ones and "regular" um, whatzit, prefolds with covers? I love the prints that Happy Heiny's has too! Any advice for a total newbie? Thanks!

3/4 of my stash was done before I even conceived, I sew a lot at home I just need a ton of prefolds, and since I don't need all that fancy schmancy stuff I thought I'd ask for new pockets in M and L for my baby shower.

I'm an AIO mama. I tried everything under the sun with dd1 and early on with dd2, but by 3 or 4 months with dd2 I realized that AIO's were the way to go for us. I'll probably be using the nb and small fitteds we have, but I'll also get a bunch of AIO's to use as well. Now, what brand is the question? I love Very Baby's! (I'm a very loyal VB user!) But I recently tried a Bumgenious, and wow! The fit is amazing on dd and they can hold the hoover dam!!! I'm quite uncertain of using any diaper with a poly inner with a newborn though, since dd2 had bird legs and the pee wouldn't soak in quick enough with the nb pocket diapers we had. We'll see.

I'm sure I'll be hung for this one but we use disp diapers.. our childcare situation is such that is is our only option , I just don't have it in me to do cloth like I did with my 1st.. I am just being honest,, sorry environment.. we do use Nature Boy's or Tushies tho,, does that help any?

Sorteep, you are totally free to do whatever is best for your family. I don't think you need to apologize for that. When dd2 was born, I used cloth on her, but I quit using cloth on dd1. It was just too much laundry and we had to use sposies at daycare anyway. I've gone back and forth between cloth and sposies over the last few years, doing cloth about 70% of the time, but sometimes it's just not the best option. We did use cloth at home quite a bit when they were in daycare, so it's possible to do both, but if that doesn't work for your family, don't apologize about it.

My dd is in a sposie right now. We usually use cloth, like 99% of the time. Right now she has a rash, and I want to use my rash ointment without worrying about it all over the dipes. I know air is good for it, but I just can't abide the thought of my exhausted self cleaning pee off the floor, which is inevitably what will happen. I'm taking the opportunity to strip my dipes good then sun them since it is nice out today. I haven't had a chance to do that in a long time.

Sometimes we use disposables when we go out because for some reason she's been really leaky lately...the leg holes seem an awful lot bigger than they used to.

You do what's best for you!

I bought a whole stash having never cloth diapered before, but I lurked on diapering forums quite a bit so hopefully I've chosen well. I bought prefolds and Thirsties covers for the first month or two, and bumGenius one size pockets for (hopefully) the rest of the time I'll be diapering this baby.

I have a whole bin of newborn and small fitteds, prefolds and soakers in my storage room, but I am too chicken too take them out and look at them. I sold all my dipes after dd#2 potty trained right after her second birthday. We were not planning to have any more children. When I found out I was pregnant last summer I was so excited I collected a whole stash of adorable newborn stuff. After my miscarriage I had to pack it away because it was too sad to keep looking at it. Now I am afraid I'll jinx myself if I take it out again.

But, if this baby sticks we were very happy with prefolds/prefitteds and wool at home, and bumware aios for going out. That's probably what I'll do again. And, of course, I'll get some adorable knitted longies. I"d use those even if I were using disposable dipes.

Laura--I agree, you do whatever works for you! I used sposies the entire time for my DS, and only started CDing my DD when she was a year old.

I have a decent NB/ small stash of fitteds from when DD was a newborn and quite a few wool covers. I think I'm going to be converting 1/2 of my infant ubcpfs into prefitteds (about 2doz) (DH has a hard time folding). I also need to work on knitting up some longies, when DD was born, I only had 2 pr cuz I had only been knitting for a few months, now I've been knitting for 2yrs and can crank out a pr of NB/ small longies pretty quick.

i use mostly ones that i make myself, but i do want to buy some kissaluv's size 0 for the beginning.. i hear they work great on newborns!

When I started CD'ing DD at 4 months, we got one of everything to see what worked for her and for us. That is the way to go. You don't want to get stuck with 10 diapers that you hate. We used a combination of fitteds & covers, pockets, and AIOs for quite a while but when dd started squirming through diaper changes, we dropped the fitteds and covers. It was hard enough to have her stay still through getting one diaper piece on - getting a fitted closed and THEN a cover closed was out of the question. So now we use mainly pockets (Happy Heiny's and FuzziBunz mostly) for daytime and an AIO with a hemp doubler for nighttime. It works well for us. I stuff all the pockets right out of the dryer (which reminds me I have to get off MDC and go do that ) so they are essentially 'one piece' when I need one. As for the HH prints, there are some adorable ones but keep in mind that they will leak faster than the solids because they are made from a different weight PUL. It's not a huge deal though - when I put a HH print on her I just make sure to check her a little more often. Sorry for the book, but I love helping CD newbies.

As for the new babe, I think we'll just do prefolds and covers in the beginning. I want to get past the every-diaper-change-is-a-poo-explosion phase before I bust out the more expensive diapers . I will probably spoil myself (errr..my baby ) and get a newborn HH pocket or two. They are rediculously cute with a crossover tab for extra skinny waists.

Thanks for the great info Cathy!

For the cd'ing newbies, you'll also want to remember that what works at one stage (i.e. the newborn stage), may not work at another stage. For example, I don't care for side-snapping anything on newborns. Their legs are still all curled up and it's hard to get them to put their legs down enough to get the snaps done up. I usually stick with front closing diapers. But side-snapping would be perfect on a chubby 6 month old.

Generally, you can't go wrong with a variety of sizes of prefolds and covers. Bummis Super Whisper Wraps are my favorite. But I had a lot of friends who liked the Bumkins covers for their prefolds since they have a more trim fit and a pocket at the top of the back to hold the prefold in place. I'm not a fan of prefolds, but they do work.
