Wedding Dress

What did you do with yours?

I am not attached to mine. It needs to be cleaned and I wore it 6 years ago. I have no idea what it would cost to clean it. If I tried to sell it, I don't know if I would break even with the cleaning.

We are moving and I am trying to get rid of everything, but make a little money at the same time. We are having a moving sale, but I don't think I would get any takers for a wedding dress on a Marine base.

What to do, what to do

Those are my exact thoughts (uncleaned dress, six years this July :, who wants it now?). I keep thinking I will cut it up for something special for my girls but so far that "something special" has eluded me. Donating it is a great idea.

If it is a "standard" wedding dress, you can use the washing machine with regular detergent. Then take it to a consignment store or donate it locally. A few dresses may be good for selling on eBAY, if you have a very large size dress or a high-end designer. You can "search completed auctions" to find out.

I just dropped mine off at the thrift store a couple days ago(I got married last september), uncleaned. I wish I had known about the brides against breast cancer thing!
It's good to have it out of my hair though.

It isn't a designer dress. I have been selling on eBay for a few years and I don't think I would get more than $50 for it. It is informal (no train or bustle) but has beads all over it. No washing machine. We took pics on the beach, so the bottom is dirty.

I e-mailed a contact for the charity to ask if the dress needs to be cleaned before I send it. The website said, "If possible, an additional $10 donation will help with the cost of preparing your dress for sale". I will post and let other people know in case they want to get rid of their dresses too.

I'm saving mine on the chance that I have a dd. I'm hoping to make a christening dress from it.

My wedding dress is one of the few sentimental things I am keeping. I had it cleaned and it is stored in a special box in my closet. I loved wearing that dress!

What a great organization. I don't have a wedding dress (I have no interest in marriage) but I've been in several weddings and would have gladly donated my bridesmaid dress to this organization. I have no sentimental attachment to them. As it turns out, I'm in yet again another wedding in November so know just where to unload the dress when I'm done with it. I'll see if the rest of the wedding party (all 12 of us which includes all my sisters and nieces) want to donate theirs as well.

Thanks for sharing the link!

I think mine is in the closet at my parents' house. Honestly, I have no idea where else it could be. :

Donating my wedding gown sounds like a great idea. I think my dh would be devastated. He was upset when I died the shoes I wore at our wedding to match a bridesmaid dress I was wearing. He is so overly sentimental. But then I think, maybe my dd will want to wear it some day. I am torn. I would not mind reclaiming that bit of closet space the giant box takes up. Maybe I will save the veil for dd.

I donated mine to a local charity that lends out dresses to brides who can't afford a new one. I had this planned before the wedding, when I chose to have a brand new dress made rather than rent one.

And then my Mom went ahead and had it professionally cleaned and hermetically sealed in a box designed to keep it in mint condition for the next 30 years. I had figured she'd just get it cleaned and I'd donate it on a hanger, in a plastic bag like most dry cleaning comes home in. I have no idea how much extra it cost her to have it prepared like that.

I had mine made into a baptism gown for my daughters.

I too made mine into a baptismal gown for my DDs. My aunt had hers made into a first communion gown for her DD.

"We also accept complete sets of bridesmaid dresses, veils, slips, shoes, mother’s dresses and flower girl gowns."

Does that mean they won't take an individual bridesmaid dress?

A couple of years ago I donated mine to the organization that USMCbaby posted.

Oh, I could NEVER get rid of my wedding dress. I had mine cleaned and professionally sealed in a box. It's in my Hope chest in my room. I love it!

Mine was never cleaned and it's hanging on a hanger in my closet!

(It's got the original plastic bag over it...)

I have 2 daughters; maybe one of them will want it? I didn't want my moms (she wore a lavender colored dress) so maybe my girls won't want mine either?

Sincerely,
Debra, homeschooling mom of 4 ages 10, 9, 7, and 45mos

*I got married 13 years ago.

Another big thank you for posting this! Mine will be heading that way as soon as I find a box.
