Snaps vs aplix - do snaps have any disadvantages?

I've always used aplix and it has been fine until now when my tabs are starting to get a lot of stuff in them and aren't holding as well, or if the dipe is damp. And I've has a couple loop parts come off I haven't used the fold back tabs until now, so maybe that will make a difference. But I've also considered maybe aplix will be easier to take off now that my son is getting older, true?
Snaps seem to be more expensive, true? Seems so especially because I either have to pay for snap service or buy a press myself. But, you don't have to worry about anything in the laundry.
Anyone else with a preference and/or experiences?
Thanks!

Snaps are great

I just got my snap machine in about a week ago and it is wonderful! I got tired of the expense of hook/loop and how ratty it got and made everything in the wash, even my fold back tabs didn't work half the time. I got my press package from Serena of notionsupply yahoo group. She is very inexpensive if you don't mind waiting a month to get it from China. It is so much fun to place the snaps and to use it! It looks more professional, way better than hook/loop. Lol, I know I am gushing but I just LOVE it. I paid $99 for the press, 1100 snaps and 4 die sets. I was paying somewhere around $6 for hook/loop from walmart that only did like 3-4 dipers. I figure that it will pay for itself soon, since I am hoping to sell dipes someday. You can also resell the press when you are done with it.. Even though I wouldn't, it is too useful. Well, thats my 2 cents...

Other than the start up cost, the disadvantage of snaps is that the fit is less flexible since there is a finite snap placement. However, snaps are better for side closing dipes. Then the waist and legs can be snapped on different tightnesses. FYI, Serena is actually out of snap presses right now and won't be selling them for a while (she just had a baby).

Fastening a diaper with snaps is a little slower than aplix so with a squirmy baby it can be tricky.

Snaps take a teensy bit longer to fasten than hook&loop because you have to fit stud to socket instead of just plop and go, but the time difference is so minimal and definitely worth it. I have both H&L diapres {a variety of Velcro, Touchtape and Aplix} and snaps and even with my wiggly, impatient toddler I vastly prefer the snaps. The snaps hold better than the h&l and my toddler can't take them off.

I bought the press package from Serena, too. $135 for 1100 sets {plus she sent like 4 or 5 extra packs of 50 sets each}, the press, 2 dies and air lift shipping, which took 12 days from order to arrival. Worth every penny.

Plus, snaps look tidier, you don't get the 'diaper snake' in the wash, they look cleaner and more professional, no loose threads getting caught in the hook and making the diaper look messy and unkempt, and the snaps come in such bright, neat colors which you can match to your diapers. Definitely the snaps are my preference.

Overall, I adore snaps! If you do much sewing for kids, it is likely that your press will pay for itself quite quickly!

Aside from the startup cost and the extra time it takes to snap them up, I can't think of any other disadvantage.

My toddler cannot be put in an Aplix diaper without putting a pair of pants on over it immediately - otherwise the diaper comes off in a matter of seconds.
