Well, heck, the one time Frodo really showed some spine was when he stopped and faced the Nazgul and told him they could not have him. The movie made that all Arwyn.

Thanks so much Zoeanne, there have been 20 posts on this thread and 19 were anti PJ. I consider myself a die-hard fan of the books as well everyone. No one can make a complete adaption of LotR from book to movie. It is just not possible. Sure things were changed but I still think that the interpretation of the book that the filmmakers made were made with good reason. So I still feel that I would want The Hobbit to be made by the people who did LotR.

Thanks again Zoeanne

The thing is...

It isn't so much the things that were left out but the things that were added..that were just BAD.

I understand why the Scouring of the Shire was omited and how much time would have been added, but why then *add* so much NON-canonical content that isn't even correct?

I do think the movies are beautiful and that most of the casting was great. PJ utilized Tolkien experts for the sets, the costumes, the languages..but then he slips from Tolkien with the script.

I do still get teary watching the charge of the Rohirrim onto Pelennor fields (even though I know Theoden is saying Eomer's lines ) . But why leave out content and then add content he had made up?

I like the movies, I just would really have preferred less straying from canon in regard to the characters. PJ treated many of the Tolkien characters badly.

I think PJ did a great adaptation of the books. I know there were changes, but overall, I think it was fantastic. I can't sign the petition though because The Hobbitt has such a different feel to it than LotR. i really think there needs to be a different director. Sorry. I'm excited for it to come out!

Exactly.

I UNDERSTAND that things must be cut out or sped-up to adapt to the medium of film, I don't complain that the Wraiths came for Frodo right after Bilbo left, rather than many years later, and I don't mind that they left out the Scouring of the Shire, Tom Bombadil, and many other things. I get that.

What I won't accept are FUNDAMENTAL changes to established characters, and tacked-on changes to the story. He left out some wonderful things, and then added his own adulterations. That makes no sense. And that is exactly what PJ did, as a DIRECTOR.

Has PJ ever explained publicly why he made made some of the decisions he made? I would like to hear what he has to say about his characterization of Arwen and Faramir, for example.
