Father's Day Craft Ideas?

I am leading a craft with kids aged 4-12 at our church for Father's Day.

For mother's day, I made up a tonne of milk bath and let the kids pick their own fragrances for it. Then I let them go to town with all my scrapbooking stuff so that they could make cards. It was a big hit.

I'd like to do something cool for father's day. I'd like to make something that the men can actually use, or consume. I don't really want to contribute to anyone's clutter

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I think things that fathers can use in their offices are good ideas. Frames for family photos or children's drawings is one thought.

We are going to decorate a flower pot and plant a peace lily in it for dh's office. They do well without sunlight and actually help to clean stale office air. I'm not sure how we're going to decorate the pot yet. Maybe instead of decorating the pot we will make some sort of decoration to stick in the soil (there's a name for this sort of thing but I can't think of it right now). Or we might paint and varnish rocks to put around the plant.

I am right there with you regarding "consumables". I hate cluttery crap, and I know my Dad does too.

Last year we made him "Sand art brownie mix". It's along the same lines as the cookies in a jar - you combine all the dry ingredients, pushing down areas with a chopstick or wooden spoon back, then layering the next ingredient (cocoa, sugar, flour, etc). I put the instructions on a tag (printed from the computer) and put it in a mason jar that could be reused.

He loves to barbecue - I wish I could get him to use a dry rub because I'd make up a big batch of dry rub, some home made barbecue sauce, and include a new barbecue tool or mitt or something.

For Christmas I made up a huge batch of buckwheat pancake mix with directions (he always makes pancaks at home and loves buckwheat at restaurants) and got him a great griddle so he doesn't have to stand at the stove while everyone else eats.

Let's see - what else...it's hard to come up with something without knowing what they're into, you know?

That would be a cute gift to do with a bunch of kids -- homemade barbecue sauce or a dry rub.

LONE STAR DRY RUB
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon garlic salt
1 tablespoon sweet Hungarian paprika
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper


Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl or a jar. Use immediately or cover and store in a cool, dry place for up to three months.
Yield: 1/3 cup

1/2 cup ground black pepper
1/2 cup seasoned salt
1 1/4 cups turbinado sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dry mustard
3/4 tablespoon chili powder

Mix all dry ingredients.

1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon chipotle powder
1 tablespoon dried sage powder

Basically, you can use anything to make a dry rub.
A REALLY easy one (I use this all the time) is 1 part brown sugar, 1 part chili seasoning (like out of the shaker), 1 part salt.

HASENOUR'S BARBECUE SAUCE

Source: The Courier-Journal (from 6/16/1993) - Hasenour's, Louisville, Kentucky

2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
1 (12 oz.) can tomato paste
1 (32 oz.) bottle ketchup
1/4 C. granulated sugar
2 T. mustard
2 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. Tabasco
2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. brown sugar
2 tsp. horseradish (do not use creamy)
1/2 C. soy sauce
1/4 C. vinegar
1 qt. water

In a large kettle combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook 15 minutes. Store in refrigerator. Use with pork, ribs and chicken.

Makes 3 quarts.

NOTES: For a smoky flavor, add 1 tablespoon liquid smoke.

(I have made the recipe in my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, but can't find it right now - if you do a google search, you'll find all kinds of recipes).

For Dad's

I used with the daycare kids make up a card and it had a little rhyme inside with either a tea-bag or a coffee sachet and some sugar sachet's as well. the picture could be in either the shape of a teapot or a coffee mug and then on the inside was the teag, coffee ect with this little verse.

I'm so very very glad
That I have you for my Dad
You're always taking care of me
Being as helpful as can be
It must have been my lucky day
When I came to your house to stay
I want to say a big Thank You
For every single thing you do
I couldn't love you any more
You're the best Dad
That's for sure!!

This is also great for grandparents as well

Or you could do a hand or foot cast that could be used as a paper weight or a door stop.
