One of our fave books has always been
Jingle Dancer by Cynthia L. Smith. It's great for non-Aborginal classrooms because, unlike so many kids books with Aboriginal characters, the characters are urban women still connected to their culture. I found many books in classrooms when I was working in the school system that were just full of pseduo-Aboriginal spirituality and back to nature, eco-warrior stuff. But the reality is the fastest growing Aboriginal populations in Canada (where I am) are urban and off reserve.
