What kind of knit to use for baby clothes?

I'm determined to make something for this baby. Guess I better figure out how to thread the bobbin.

A very kind mama sent me some really soft knit, but I'm not sure what kind it is. So right now I have enough, but would like to know for future references.

I didn't realize there were so many different kinds of knit.

I'd never consider using any but natural fibers for baby clothing that goes next to the skin, though. For outer layers (cardigans/jackets etc.) maybe mixed fibers, but still consisting largely out of natural fibers (say 80%). There's a link on my blog to some free sewing patterns for babies. Thanks for the link. I only want 100% cotton, I'm just not sure if I need interlock, jersey, etc. I'm clueless. I can't find knits locally so I would need to shop online and it's difficult since I can't really see it.

Oh I see! You know what, you had me realize I didn't know what the difference was myself either, even though I almost exclusively sew with knits
So when I googled for *knits+jersey+interlock* I found some pretty clear descriptions of the differences here and here.
I have no experience with ordering fabrics online in the US myself, but I'm sure lots of ladies on this board can recommend you some good links. I am recycling adult shirts and sweaters from the thrift shop mostly (that would be a not so costly way to get familiar with different types of knits too)
