Sergers for thick fabrics and layers-Brother or Janome?

I think I am narrowing it down. I would like a serger for thicker fabrics and multiple layers; diaper making mostly. My budget doesn't permit much more than $400. I have read great reviews on the Brother 1034D and the Janome 204D and 634D. Brother actually seems to have better reviews (and more, but maybe because it is cheaper). Would I be unwise to get a cheaper machine if I can afford one a little more expensive? Now may be the only time for a long while I could afford a Janome. Is the Janome better for what I am looking to do? Anyone out there have these machines?

Have you looked for a used machine? Try online AND calling around to local sewing machine dealers.

I had/have both of those Janome. The 634D is MUCH nicer. I loved my 204 until I got the 634.

I had a cheap white before those and I saw a big differece. I could barely get through 2 pieces of hemp with the white.

I would go with the Janome 634D. It's a great investment.
