Low Estrogen???

Okay...so I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Hopefully, this isn't TMI

My son was born the end of July '06 so he is now about 8 months old. We have been bf-ing the whole time. Since ds arrived, being intimate has become nearly impossible. Anytime I even become aroused I am then unable to urinate for up to 8 hours. It is so, so painful. Way worse than giving birth

My midwife referred me to a specialist (gyn/urology) who told me she had never heard of anything like that before. She gave me a RX for estrogen cream and said maybe the problem was that since i was still bf maybe i just needed more estrogen "down there". It has seemed to help, but I worry about the hormones passing to ds...It hasn't seemed to effect my milk supply. Is this a valid concern? Also, the doc said that until I weaned ds, she didn't have any other ideas as to what may be causing this to happen- so I feel like I am in a no-win situation...

Any thoughts?

I've heard of a lot of moms using premarin cream to help things out. I think it's different than taking a bcp w/ estrogen. BFing and sex don't work well together for me either (at least it sounds like you want to hav sex) and it's a struggle for us.

I have very low estrogen while nursing. It's very common. If doctors are unfamiliar with it, that's because they're not seeing many nursing moms. Estrogen cream or an est-ring (my preference) can help.

ETA: The estrogen in the creams or rings is undetectable in your bloodstream. It's absorbed by local tissues but not systemically absorbed. Your babe will be fine.

It is nice to know I am not alone! The way the doc was acting...I thought I was just really strange. Thanks for the info re: estrogen cremes and rings. That puts my mind at ease.
