My son has been diagnosed with a upper lip tie. He was refered to the facial surgeon over a month a go, they now just made the appointment, but it will be at least 3 more months (minimum) before it gets fixed. He is now 8 mos old. My nipples are cracked allready from the poor latch. I can't possibly wait another 3 months or longer. Their solution was yup you guessed it, jsut give him a bottle. My son won't tkae a bottle, not that I would give him one anyway. i am beyond mad. Every time I feed him, it hurts. It is only getting worse as he gets bigger and stronger. What the heck am I supposed to do???????? And people wonder why the bfing rates are so low, as soon as there is a problem instead of correcting it, they just say give them a bottle, and I bet ya thats what most parents would do.........................

I would hunt out another doc. Even a good LC should have connections to a doc in your area that does the procedure, the LC should/could even do the referral and even call ahead, you should be able to get it done within the week. Don't settle on waiting in pain or giving the dreaded bottle (even if he would take it).:

HUGS

OH also I just remembered my LC saying that she knew an Ear,nose & throart doc in my area that did the procedure since it was just so simple.

There isn't any here. There is a "breastfeeding consultant" And the one's at the "health unit" I called them this morning and the said to me "Have you tried the haberman" Yup thats a bottle, so their suggestion was to give him a bottle. Other then that there is the LLL I have called and left them a message, so hopefully I can get some help there, 3 more months is just to long.....

If nursing is that bad, really all you can do is pump and use a sippy or bottle. Hugs!

I would throw and outright hissy fit and call/write a letter to everyone under the sun until my son was seen.

ditto! be a fierce, non-stop advocate for yourself and don't stop until you're heard.

Try calling the docs office and getting on the waiting list for cancellations. Is there anywhere even a few hours away that you could go to get this done?

I agree w/the others, make a huge stink! And look around elsewhere too - maybe another city nearby? In any event, I think you should be commended for continuing to nurse your DS...you're right, many would just turn to the bottle...he's lucky to have such a commited mama!

You have to do whatever is best for you and your family.

I can tell you that there is no one in my area that would even do this at all. I ended up traveling 4 hours each way to a practitioner that could do it. But it was the only hope I had of my son ever being able to nurse at all (she did his lip and a posterior tongue tie). It made an immediate and huge differencde in his ability to lift his tongue and flange his lips. He still isn't nursing well- 2 weeks later- but I have a lot more hope now than I did, and I feel fairly confident that he probably would have had a major speech impediment since he couldn'tlift his tongue before and now he won't...

OK pumping and giving it in anything is not an option. Never has been never will be. I made some calls, caused a rucus, and the childrens hospital (4hrs away) said they can do. We are leaving on thursday (we had to go anyway next week for some other appointments now I just get a vacation, instead of just a bunch of appointments. ) Minaswell make the best of a crappy situation. Anyway thanx alot for giving me some corage, sometimes thats all we need is someone else to say they would feel the same way!

Actually, there are lots of other options to a sippy or bottle. You could use a syringe to feed the milk, tho that could be time consuming, or a finger feeder, or a small cup like a shot glass size. All are better alternatives to an artificial nipple on a sippy or bottle. Not sure what would work best as I am not familiar with the upper lip tie. Another option for poor latch is a nipple shield which may or may not help in your situation -again, i am not familiar with the problem. But a nipple shield forces the baby to latch on correctly. We used one w dd for the first 8 wks. You do have to wean them off it (tho I knew someone who still nursed her toddler with one. Some people have suppy issues with them but very few).

Good luck!!

Sure there are, but at 8 mos old, the baby may not even take a syringe feed or finger feed. If mom isn't willing to pump though, it's n/a anyways.

I'm glad you'll get it fixed soon.
