Wisconsin NBA fans encouraged to donate formula - Page 2

I'm trying to think of breastfeeding-friendly alternatives for those people who are not comfortable donating formula.

You could donate money to your local Baby Friendly Hospital. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative is a great program in my opinion.

Or maybe you could donate money (or human milk!) to a Milk Bank, if there is a non-profit one near you.

Or your local La Leche League. They are non-profit, depend on volunteers, and I understand they are struggling financially in recent years.

I looked at the site late last night and again today. The bolded section is an addition to their release - due to contacts from folks here I'd imagine!

Whats the nearest Milk Bank? Lets pressure them to include monetary donations to that milk bank, and put that on the website, too.

The Michigan bank is listed on the Lactivist blog as "in development?" If someone has Lactnet* access maybe they could confirm this?

So the closest one appears to be in Iowa

Here's one of the nice testimonials from the web site

For small preemies, it is quite a struggle and we need to do everything possible to help them. Mother's milk helps preemies, and I feel strongly that no preemie should be deprived of the benefits of mother's milk. That is why we need the Mother's Milk Bank.

Since Promom hasn't updated their activism pages since Sept. can anyone at the lactivism blogs post this idea?

And should we let the milk bank know so they'll be prepared for extra work and publicity?

Just thought I would add. It is right in the middle of the article and in bold.

That was most definitely not in the article when I first read it. Wow, it looks like the lactivists are making a difference!!!

I wish they had done a drive to support LLL here in Wisconsin instead, that could have been even more helpful to new moms. Or done a drive to donate good quality breastpumps to new moms who have to return to work.

The thing is, almost all women have at least a partial milk supply, if not full. Very few women can't produce any milk at all. So, if a mom isn't able to fully breastfeed and are in need, they could get WIC to fill in the gaps of what they can't produce. And WIC does give quite a bit of formula each month, when my oldest was on it, there was very little that we had to buy out of pocket each month. I guess I am just not understanding or seeing where the need is for all this formula? I think the money would be so much better spent to help women breastfeed as much and for as long as possible. Then again, I am a lactavist, so my ideas would go that way.

We are generating really good questions and ideas on this thread.

Take a look at the plea for coupons on craiglist, posted on another thread here this morning.
http://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/bab/298317037.html

Same idea, same problem

Anyhow, re: their addition to the press release - that bolded paragraph definately was not there at first - I copied the entire press release to my post when I emailed it to the Lactivisim Yahoo group, and it wasn't there.

Even if they added it now, it wouldn't have been on the initial press release that they sent out to the media - so that additional paragraph will have little impact unless they actually say something at the event, or change the focus of the event.

Janice

I wish I wasn't busy with another real-life thing (my dd's dance competition this weekend) or else I'd like to pull an information package together myself.

There is a milk depot in Madison. See information at <http://www.happybambino.com/page.asp?redir=aspx&pgid=150328> and <http://www.freewebs.com/mothersmilkwisconsin/>. Otherwise, the next closest is in Iowa as far as I know. I looked into donating when my daughter was an infant, but that's 3 years ago now. (THREE years!)

Julia

Iowa City: 255 m

Is a milk depot a place where donated milk is dropped off, and then sent to a larger milk bank?

Or you could donate to an adoptive mom because buying milk from a milk bank would run about $2500.00/month.

Let me know and I'll send you my address.
