grab some coffee table books from the library, rocks, geodes, crystals.
make rock candy or melt and pour suckers
growing crystals on a charcoal briquette
jello cubes in fancy glasses
cookies with sparky sugar topping
ice cubes in fancy shapes, sparkling cider, fancy straws
decorate something with stick-on plastic gems: small mirror, treasure chest, pencil box
string beads on necklaces, cheap semi-precious stones or faceted plastic
science lessons on how crystals form, where/why/how
there is a Magic School Bus episode on how sugar forms crystals, and one on inside the earth.
draw crystal geodes. start with a wobbly circle, then add layers in 'rock' colors. kind of like a round rock colored rainbow. cover thick with liquid kids glue and let dry. makes it glossy and dimensional
treasure hunt for stones. use a rock guide and hide various mineral samples around. find the sample and name it.
field trip to a 'rock shop'. some have a discount section of crappy rocks by the pound. Ours was at a friends home who has an online store. She had tons literally of rocks piled in her backyard. Carlin had a blast there digging around for just the 'perfect' rocks and putting them in a sand pail.
paint pet rocks.
cut snowflakes/stars with heavy duty aluminum foil.
photocopies of rock samples, cut and paste into their design.
sounds like a blast!
