Snap Press vs. Aplix

For those of you who have used both, which method do you prefer and why? I used Aplix for dd's dipes, and for the next baby, dh said I could get a press. (yah!) BUT I dont know if it will be worth it. I like the look of snap dipes, and I can never seem to keep the aplix straight as I am sewing it on. And since I am a newish seamstress, the idea of cutting out some sewing is appealing....so what would be the drawbacks of using snaps instead of aplix?

I'm a new sewer and have been making diapers for just a couple of months. I'd used aplix while waiting for snaps for my snap press to arrive, and I always found it such a PITA. It was the thing I had the most problem sewing on, for some reason.

Well, I got my snaps yesterday and outfitted a couple diapers and bibs, and I LOVE it! The snap press is so quick and easy, and the snaps look super.

That's just my brief experience. :

Snaps take MUCH longer than aplix to put on. I HATE HATE HATE putting on snaps, so much that I make DH do it.

But I hate aplix so much more so I use the snaps.

Whic hbrand of press did you ladies get? I was wondering if they were hard to put on, and maybe it depends on the brand of snap press?

I have a KAM press I bought on FSOT. I've found using it very easy (easier than I expected).

Yeah, I have a KAM press too. It's not that it's hard, it's actually very easy.... just repetative... and boring.... and I just don't like doing it

The brand of snap press shouldn't make a difference - they operate the same way.

Aplix is less expensive and quicker to put on. That said, I love snaps!

I prefer snaps over the aplix so much that I'm considering tearing the velcro off of some of my older diapers and replacing it with snaps. Washing the velcro is a hassle ~ no matter how careful I am it always seems to snag on the other diapers and my only pair of knit shorties have been ruined by washing them with velcro items. The snaps take a bit longer than the aplix, but not much. It's mostly just repetitive ~ poke, pop, set, snap. Poke, pop, set, snap. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Snaps looks tidier, they come in pretty colors, they're easier {IMO} to use and they're just more fun.

I prefer snaps by a large margin. I ordered my snap press from Serena in China and have already saved money using it.

Sooooo jealous! WIsh I had the cash for a snap press. Laundering with aplix is always fun, no matter how hard you try to get the laundry tabs in the right position! And sewing it on, even more exciting! :

I, too, am looking forward to the day I can afford that bit of luxury. Enjoy!!!!

Where do you get a snap press at and how expensive are they?

I invested in the industrial snap press from diapershop.com and industrial size 20 snaps and I am SO PLEASED that I did. I want to use the diapers I am making for at least 2 babes so aplix just wasn't an option for me! It drives me crazy!! I always joke that it's a good think my snap press is so heavy or I'd be stalking around the house installing snaps on everything But really, I figured I'd use it for all sorts of stuff (bibs, duvet cover closures, curtain tie backs, etc) so that's how I justified it! hehe

I got my snap press from a Yahoo coop (notionsupply, highly recommended), and tried it out for the first time yesterday. I'm definitely happy I got it, but here are a couple of tips I wish I had known before starting out:

- if you make a mistake, it's a PITA to get the snap off the dipe. I used a flathead screwdriver to pry it off (wear safety glasses!). You have to actually break the prong off to get the snap off. Let me tell you - it's very reassuring to know that there is basically NO WAY the snaps will ever come off on their own.
- if you press too hard, you will squish the snap, so make sure to practice a few times on scraps to get the hang of how hard you have to press
-make sure the snap/stud/socket is completely flat on the fabric. A couple of times I applied them, they were partially over FOE and it ended up squishing part of the resin making it unusable

That's what I've learned so far. The snaps look really good, and you definitely get faster as you go along. Have fun!

I love my snap press. I can't remember where I got it. I bought it a few years ago when there was a snap press deal going on.

I hate aplix. Snaps look prettier.

I just whack mine with a hammer on the concrete slab patio. I don't pry. The snap falls right off after a whack or two.
