I love my mom (long)

a lactivist moment for my mom background she nursed my two older sisters for a month or two, my baby brother and I were both formula fed. I nursed ds1 for only 4 months (long story there, ignorance mostly)

anyhow..we went a bit over a week without seeing her and we went over there the other day so she could see the boys and whatnot. well in the time we didn't see her Jacob (ds2) went through a growth spurt. he's pretty chunky already and then he just got chunkier.

in time he got hungry and was making the "omg I must have my boobie milk or i will just die right now mom i've gotta have it" noises/movements and so I nursed him. My mom came in and sat next to us and took in the milk drunk look of my son who was sprawled across my lap looking like a blissed out chunky boy. (goodness I love it!) he was dozing in and out and not really eating anymore just nursing for comfort. my mom asked me how old he was and I told her and this is the convo we had:

mom: wow 8 1/2 months huh? isn't it about time for him to be on a bottle or a cup or something? I mean does he really NEED to nurse?
me: he has bottles while i'm at work but I'm trying to get him onto a cup. R (dh) says that he takes one but he won't for me. maybe because I put breastmilk in.
mom: (to ds2) look at you! you don't need that boobie! you are chunky enough as it is...and look...you aren't even eating...you just want to be close to mommy! (anyone else see the opening here??? )
me: (taking the opening) well he does actually need it...remember breastmilk or formula for the first year, and actually aap and who are recommending breastmilk as the bulk of nutrition until two years old. and needing to be close to me is still a need. whether he needs the nutrition or needs to cuddle he still does need to nurse.
mom: oh really? wow I didn't know that. its a shame you weren't around when I had you girls. so...you aren't going to wean any time soon then?
me: I figured I'd let him decide..that's why we're waiting until next summer to ttc cuz then he'll be 2 when I get pg just in case it makes my milk go away.

I just love how she is so open to learning more about nursing. and I've heard her telling other people what i've told her.

That's so great! My mom's a bit of a lactivist too. I took her to a LLL meeting with me when ds was a week old, and some of the other attendees were talking about how there parents didn't bf them. The leader started to say that they weren't as educated as they are now. Well my usually shy and quiet mother jumped right in to say that she breastfed both of her children with no help or support. I was so proud (and hormonal) I teared up.
