Hi --

My son has started biting his nails (probably because he saw me, a lifetime nail biter ) and chewing shirt cuffs, and my daughter has started sucking her fingers during the day, walking around, which she never used to do -- it was only at nap or bedtime before.

Any suggestions? I know Freud thinks it's my fault and have been trying give them extra snuggles and hugs in case that would help , but I wonder too if they're both getting teeth (molars for her, front teeth for him?) and if one of those amber teething necklaces would help. Sometimes I give them a washcloth to chew on, and but they lose track of them and don't seem satisfied with that as a solution. I remember going through a phase when I was small of chewing on things -- clothes, towels, etc and the satisfaction of feeling that tear or pull of the thread. So I sympathize. But I don't want all his shirts to become rags, ya know? He's a small kid and lasts in his clothes a loooong time.

I'm ok with this if its' a passing phase, but I'm worried about her messing up the structure of her mouth with sucking something past infancy, and also wondering what's going with him -- is it emotional? can I help?

thanks for any advice.
