I am still involved a lot with Lilly's NICU, and one of the nurses e-mailed me about this yesterday. A mom was released last week able to nurse exclusively, but still using a nipple shield. Well she called yesterday morning because her 5-year-old has cut the shield in half and it was getting close to feeding time and she didn't know what to do. With a preemie that just came home it's not like she could run to a store and buy one. She was calling to ask if they thought it would be okay to use formula in a bottle until her dh got home with a shield. The head neo said not to bother with the formula, he was going to send one of the nurses aids over to her house immediately with a shield. He told her that if she gave formula and bottles it might totally undo all of the hard work that she had done trying to bf. I must say that it is really great to see drs and a hospital that really understand how important breastfeeding is. I wish more places, especially NICUs, were like this.
A Great Story
