liner for covers

Has anyone ever tried this?

I received some waterproof covers as a shower gift and was thinking about making my own covers for pre-frolds. Can I sew the plastic liners inside the covers I make? Maybe between two pieces of fabric so it is not directly on ds's skin? Just a brainstorming thought i wanted to get others opinion on! TIA!

I don't see why not. And it will save you from having to order the PUL and ship, etc. Why do you want to, do you want it to be cuter or less plasticy, or do you think it will irritate your baby? Just asking, since there is so much you can do!

If I were doing it, I would take the covers you have apart and cut out an outer fabric that's cute, which could be anything since you already have the waterproof inner, or poly fabric/ fleece, if that makes you feel more secure to have 2 layers of waterproof. I wouldn't sandwich the cover material in between two layers, I would just sew it as an inner to an outer fabric and have a nice 2 layer cover. I have a kushie cover that I thought would irritate ds since it's vinyl, but he doesn't mind at all so your babe might not mind either. Adding another inner layer just seems like extra work and bulk to me. Or you could use the covers you have, take them apart and sew a colored FOE onto the edges so that they look cute and turn it into a wrap.

FWIW, when I sew covers I use an outer fabric of cotton, fleece, or PUL and an inner layer of PUL, sew em together with FOE or add on elastic and velcro and that's it! Have fun!

PUL layers

lolo's mom, you mentioned printed PUL outer layer (along with others) and said an inner PUL solid for inside...are you facing the treated sides together in the middle? Is two layers of PUL needed? Could one layer of PUL be finished with fold over elastic? TIA:

The PUL inner layer has to have the treated side (shiny) towards the baby, at least this is how I make em. Most covers, too, if you notice have the shiny side toward the baby, like BSWW has the print on the outside and the treated side on the inside. I added another fabric to the outside but that was because I got stuck with a lot of solid PUL and didin't want to make all of the covers look the same.

That said, you can definitley make a cover with just one layer of PUL. I have heard that printed PUL might need two layers, but I think it depends on how thick the PUL is. If it is 1 mm than maybe you'd want two layers, 2mm you might only need one. I have a few store bought covers that are one layer and they work well, all of my own covers are two layers but the outers are either cotton or microfleece (I had some to use up). So they really don't have any extra waterproofing on the outer layer, it really just makes em soft on the outside. Not for nighttime use. I hope this makes sense!

I just bought some printed PUL from acutabovefabrics.com and it is 2mm so I am going to make a one layer cover with FOE out of it. If you check out the sticky in diapermaking they have some free patterns for covers using only one layer of PUL.

If you are like me, the pattern resource list will help a lot because they have actual pictures along with the directions. So if reading this doesn't make sense, be sure to look around on there, the pictures help sooo much!

Here is a pic of a cover (left) and a pocket (right)
the cover is inner PUL and outer microfleece, the pocket is outer PUL and inner microfleece

Great, thanks!

Yeah, I made the snap happy dc, 6years ago for my son, but I used Ultrex and hadn't found the PUL...Also, being down in sunny FL I want as few layers as possible for the babe! Thanks for the advise! Les

Just found the PUL single layer on the sticky...how easy!! Also, found the "FOE" you can buy in the stores, she calls it 'Stretch Binding' I kept asking at Joannes for FOE and they looked at me like I was crazy!

Oh! I will have to go to joannes to get some FOE, I looked there for FOE not stretch binding... Never knew it had two names!

Thanks so much for the tips!
Lolosmom: pretty much just looking to make them cuter, easier to get on and off, recycle what I have.
Looks like I'll have to give it a whirl & let ya'll know how it works out. Now if I could only learn how to use my sewing machine...
