altering pants? anyone? help!

I have a pair of casual pants that fit me great. Which is hard to find with my bigger hips and butt. They look nice and feel comfy. But the leg part is pretty flared out. Remember that flared hem from a couple of years ago? Yeah, that. The upper part of the pants can still pass fashionwise, but the flare has got. to. go.

Anyone have any experience with doing this? Do I just open up the seams and trim and put back together?

I can make clothes for my kids, nothing too fancy, but still no expert seamstress, by any means. So, yes. Speak slowly to me.

If you have a pair of pants that you like the fit in the lower leg, use those to trace out a guide, and remember to add seam allowances. Sew where you think you want the seam to be, try them on, and when you like the fit, then trim excess fabric.

If you think you are up for it, trace the pants that you really like the fit of, and use that as a basis for a "sloper" ( basic pattern piece) for other pants/ shorts/ even skirts for yourself. Again, lay out the pants and trace where the seams are, and add seam allowance.

I think I can follow that. Thank you!
(especially for speaking slowly)
