Im making a crazy quilt for dh for xmas!! OUt of recycled fabric

We have a King sized bed so itll be huge!!

I heard that you need to sew the fabric onto muslin then put the filler and backing...

Just wondering if I needed to use muslin or could use another fabric..Is prefer to usee a sheet thats already sized for our bed

Keeping with the recycled fabric idea!

Any info would be great!!!!

Thanks

Recycled bed sheets should work just fine. You just want some sort of foundation to start with.

Thanks!!! I figured as much but wanted a second opinion!!

You just want to make sure everything you use has the same fiber content (usually 100% cotton.)

You can also use recycled blanket as the filler, keeping with your theme!!!!!

Careful using a sheet depending on how you intend to quilt it -- often a sheet has a very high thread count which can screw with your tension and dimensions when quilting. I like to use 120" wide muslin for this kind of project (but I'm a snot-nosed purist, too ).

I ended up getting a very thick blanket from thrift store! Its very stiff(like muslin!)...not one that Id want to sleep with by itself! But its really warm so i dont think Ill need as much filler...again Ill prolly use another thin blanket as filler!

if youre going to use something thick as a backer to the piecing, i would say youre okay skipping a filler. just make sure everythign is prewashed (recycled fabs, im sure youre fine)
i just made DH a quilt out of some of his, ahem...ugly old t-shirts (i was sick of seeing him wear them~is that bad?) anyhoo, i pieced the t-shirt onto muslin then just put a big piece of sweatshirt fleece on the back, fuzzy side out. its pleant warm and im glad i didnt do an inner layer.
it was so easy, moms! i made 15" squares of shirts, spray adhesived them onto muslin, (square up the squares here) stitched them together (i did 3 squares by 5) them i sewed the back on inside out on 3 sides(pillowcase style), flipped it all and topstitched. so easy and cute. as an aspiring 'real' quilter i felt like a big slacker but hey, i took a weekend not a month like my others. and DH loves it!

sorry to ramble on about myself.....

That sounds awsome!!!
Thats part of my reasoning...my dh will NOT buy clothes!!! Refuses...now I won't buy any new clothes..have to come used
The negative thing about dh is he is a musician so most of his tees come from the bars he plays..beer reps leave tees and the owners save them for him(EERRRR) so he'll wear um till there holey and everything

Ive got a few tees of his im using(NO BEER ONES)
But the lining might be skipable....thanks for the advice!!

too funny! my DH is from a ski town, mammoth cali, so they are all ski shops and things there... pizza shop, fishing shop, one from a boobie bar in vegas(batchelor party for a friend....i couldnt stand to see him wear that one any more!)
they are totally thin and getting holey too, thats where the spray adhesive came in handy, i didnt have to try to get the grain straight on the stretched t's. if your backer is sturdy, obviously not a kint, it will really help stabilize everything.
cut away mamma....hell have to get new shirts eventually. or maybe not being a band guy, they always seem to get the kick-downs from the bars, i know what you mean!
