Has anyone made sandwich wraps? Have a pattern?

I'd like to make one... I've seen them... but I'm not sure what the dimensions are.

If I can get the dimensions at the least, that would be great!

It depends on what size bread you use! We have purchased oneas that are too small for our bread-machine bread and too big for graham crackers, so I'll probably make better-sized ones for both. Try making a typical sandiwch and wrapping it in paper to see what the best size/ closure placement would be for YOUR food.

I saw that the ones on Reusablebags.com were 13 inches x 13 inches and so I made a pattern that was approx 14 inches, knowing that I would stitch around the edge and it would be slightly smaller than that.

I need to cut the edges with pinking shears and apply Velcro but here is what I have.

I started off with a newspaper and wrapped 3 slices of bread (it was late and I didn't need a sandwich and wanted to be sure I had ample room but not toooo much) and when I got the shape about right, I measured out 7x7 (because I cut it folded ) on the newspaper and cut. Then I used the folded up pattern on folded up fabric and folded up vinyl (separately) and traced and cut.... This actually worked! (I was thinking I was doomed being so lazy as to not open up the fabric and trace fully or to at least only have ONE fold in it! This was with two folds!)

Hope that helps. Now that I did it, it is simple enough - I just generally don't have the guts to try something without a pattern --- maybe this is the NEW me!

What do you use on the inside? Is it just vinyl? Is that okay next to food? THe wrap n mats use Food safe, PEVA liner but I would have no idea where to get that.

Woops - I wrote a post last night but something must have happened because it isn't here!

I just used a piece of vinyl from Joanns (a remnant actually!). To be completely honest, I didn't even THINK about safety per se. I guess that I'm not overly concerned since I won't be using the wrap to heat anything up but I am curious to hear if anyone else knows about these liners or what people think of it.

Right now my baby is only 1 year old so the mats have been used to store a quick PB&J for me here and there. They haven't been put through the wringer yet.

I'm not sure where you'd get PEVA but I'm sure there is some Yahoo Group that must co-op it!

Not making these now, but if you're concerned, couldn't you put some cotton or something on the inside and the vinyl/PUL on the outside? That way, you could have "food safe" fabric near the food. I'd also make it "natural" or white, so that you didn't end up with dyed sandwiches ...

Absolutely - I don't see why not! I don't have a serger so it was zig zag stitching for me!

Vinyl can leech lead. Remember that is why so many of the soft lunch boxes were recalled? They were causing lead poisoning. Do not use vinyl.

PUL is not graded food safe, but from my research I am comfortable using it for my family.

I was going to experiment using either a layer of cloth sewn on the reverse side of PUL or using PUL and having a separate cloth that would double as a napkin. You would wrap the sandwich in the cloth then the PUL. I guess this would only work if you didn't make messy sandwiches.

Are any fabrics known to be food safe? I googled "food safe fabric" and didn't turn up anything. I would assume that a natural undyed organic cotton would be safe. Do you think colored fabric would pose a problem?

I love my Wrap-N-Mats!

I just measured mine, if this helps at all. It's 12-3/4 in one direction and about 12-7/8 in the other direction. Not perfectly square, but the corners cut off, sort of, so that it folds better, with less bulk. Corner angle is 4.25". (If that makes sense!) It perfectly fits a sandwich made with regular sized grocery store bread and filling.

Do you think you could use the stuff that you use in a Food Saver? It comes in rolls. Just not sure if you could sew it.

we are trying to stay away from plastics..could you make this with just cloth and omit the vinvyl or PUL?
