Ok, well, I moved over the weekend. All I can say is, I hope I really like it where I'm at now, because I'm never moving again. I'm too traumatized to post about it now.

I'm going to be moving the 13-15th of May, 3.5 hours away from where I currently am with my parents. All I have to say right now is next time we move, DH is doing all the packing. He has shirts that I have never seen him wear the two years we have been together and the man asked me not to throw anything away because he wants to go through things himself when he returns from deployment this fall.

I really hate all the stress that moving brings, but the good thing about this move is it will be our first rental house together. I can bring my dog and its in a rural tiny, tiny town.

I loved the link about moving tips! We will move 10 blocks away in 6 weeks. As I said before, dh is making the kitchen cabinets for our new house and then we can clean out our current garage. I made up my mind to start packing May1st. Since our weather is some days very cold and some days hot right now, it dosent make sense to pack up stuff. We already packed up about 10 boxes of stuff when we had the house on the market. We are now decluttering and donating, and giving stuff away.

I have to take down my veggie garden and remove stuff from our back yard this weekend. It will be perfect weather.

I am moving within the next 6-7 months. It could be next month, it could be in November. I don't know where/how far either. I just know that we have to move. I cannot live here any longer than I have to.

We are moving in a month and I need help!!!

We have been decluttering, but there just seems to be so much! Should I just start packing stuff up or keep decluttering until its all gone, and then pack?

Seriously, I am overwhelmed and scared that it won't get done.

Need some support that it can be done and maybe tips on how to do it!

I'm decluttering as I pack. If I waited until I was done decluttering, nothing would get packed - but I also refuse to pack clutter. So, pack with a trash bag and a donation box handy!

EEEEK! I have 3 days until I move! Did I say EEEEK?!?

Well we only had about 2 weeks from finding out we were moving until moving this weekend, but I've been packing as I go. I've been taking a closet/room (or section of room) each day and sorting through. 4 piles/bags/boxes - trash, donate, keep and pack, and keep out until the last minute (stuff we need, like a weeks worth of clothes, a few towels, a couple of pots and a days worth of dishes, etc). I need to see myself making progress to keep from going insane. Being able to walk into my bedroom, for example, and only see furniture and a small pile of clothes makes me feel like it's actually doable.

Thanks for the tidbits about packing as I go. I think that packing and decluttering in one step might be better then this just decluttering. I don't feel I am getting anywhere.

Its good to hear of other people going through the same thing. I am exctied about a fresh start at the new house. We will actually own it and so I am hoping that it will help me feel like I need to keep a serene, uncluttered environment.

Question--
Our home should be listed this week and we're decluttering and packing things so that the house looks nice while it's being shown..
So most of the toys have been boxed up and the kids won't have much left to play with.
We will have the train table and trains/tracks, kitchen with playfood.. and maybe a few books. Is this too little? I don't know how long our home will be on the market.. it could be a few weeks and it could be 3-4 months.. should I keep more out for them to play with? I'm worried that after all this work the toys will end up strewn all over the house and we will be in a panic if there is a last-minute showing or something :

3 days! wow!

I've also been decluttering as I pack. It's so much easier to declutter this way, I think, because if you put it in that box, it WILL be in your new home.. so it's much easier to be selective about what junk.. er.. things you want to bring into that new space

We are still not sure if/when/where we are moving for sure and it is driving me crazy! I think there is a pretty good chance it will be this summer/early fall, but DH and I are still negotiating where. I want to move to Portland, and he kind of wants to stay here in Seattle - BUT he is stressed about money and it is quite a bit more expensive here. But there aren't as many jobs in Portland. GAH! So we'll see.

In the meantime, I am assuming we will be moving soon, and am trying to make progress sorting through my tons of accumulated stuff. When the weather is good, we are also doing some work outside since the yard has been really neglected the past 2 years (pregnant then had DD). DH was off last week and we made a decent bit of progress on the lawn, so that is a start!

My short term goals right now are:

Finish sorting through all of my clothes, shoes, etc and weed out what I no longer want. I am putting some things up FSOT with the understanding that I have a time limit. If we *do* move this summer, we'll have a big yard sale in June, so anything that hasn't sold before then will go into the sale, and anything left will get donated. What is left I need to get all in one place and organize (right now I have clothes in three different areas of the house! ).

I am also working on the kitchen. Lots of extra things in there to purge, lots of deep cleaning to do , and I am also trying to use up things from my freezer and pantry to save money, get a fresh start and be more ready if we move soon.

Next I plan to pack up or purge some of the extra knick knack stuff that is around the house. It makes things look cluttered for us now anyway and this has been bugging me, and it will help things look better regardless.

I hate not knowing what we are doing, but I am just moving forward as though we WILL be moving soon and figure anything I do will improve the way our house feels anyway.

Thanks to everyone sharing your experiences! This is our first house, and moving out of here will be much different that the little apartments I lived in before!

I wish I had seen this thread a month ago! :

We're doing a short-distance "easy" move. My mom bought a new house in town and we're moving in to her house on a rent-to-own contract. It works out so well for everyone, b/c she doesn't have to worry about closing costs, and we don't have to worry about getting a huge loan. The housing market still really sucks around here so this is an amazing opportunity for our family. Now we're living in the upstairs half of my IL's house, so it's not completely necessary to move everything in one haul - they're okay with us leaving things here and slowly bringing them out. I'm not sure I WANT to do that because it might stunt my motivation, but we'll see.

Right now I have a guest room full of boxes that I packed two months ago...and I haven't done a whole lot since then. : I don't know what to do with all this stuff. Part of it is that I'm such an extreme perfectionist and if I don't have a box that's the perfect size for whatever I'm packing, I just don't pack it. I know I need to get over that. FAST.

Tomorrow, my husband and two of his friends are helping my mom move the last of her things to her new house. With a completely empty house, we'll have plenty of room to paint. I'm so excited about that part, because in all our married life we have never gotten to pick our own paint colors!!!

My husband and I are moving about 350 miles away in a little over three months.

I'm currently working 40 hrs/week and in school PT, so I'm just working on decluttering when I get the chance and I'm planning on doing a garage sale sometime in June (once school is over and I'm able to sort through all the crap I have in storage and figure out what to keep and what to get rid of).

Any other suggestions? For reference, we have a small apartment (425 sf) and hopefully after de-cluttering, not too much stuff!

I hear ya mama, we move tomorrow and its been a nightmare. I told everyone the only way I will move again is when they pry my dead fingers off my couch when i am 100 years old and my greatgrand kids are around.

Oh do I belong here! In another 7 weeks we will have our 8th move in 6 years. Hopefully this one will stick

We are decluttering (finally) and I am refusing to move with anything but the absolute BARE essentials. The saving grace is that the move is only about 20 minutes away. The challenge is we're moving with a 4 year old, a three year old and a 9 month (oooh-he'll be 11 months then!) old. It's super hard to move with kids. I should be used to it though!

I'm trying to start the packing process now. Looking forward to a tribe of support!
