Q about Barbara Walters comment from awhile back...

Sorry, I just saw a Jimmy Kimmel clip from around the time that Baraba Walters made her ignorant comments. However, I coudln't find an actual clip of the show (on YouTube). What did Elisabeth have to say to Barbara about it, since she was nursing at the time!

There are several old threads about it, if you search at Lactivism for The View or Elizabeth.

Click on search

Then click on advanced search

Then put "Elizabeth" or "Elisabeth" in the Key word box, or "View", or "Barbara"

Then scroll down to lactivism on the list of boards and highlight/click the word lactivism.

E. was very negative about her own bf experience, the ladies cheered when she went to formula, and the fact that E. does baby formula commercials was also discussed a lota the boards here. E. was pressured to wean by the ladies but on the other hand she told some story about a bunch of LLL people (she claimed) accosting her to tell her to nurse.

Here's one.

Elisabeth was only pregnant at the time - she wasn't yet nursing.

Elisabeth also made comments about how she never nursed in public because "nobody wants to see that." She probably agreed with Barbara that a woman nursing next to you on a plane makes people uncomfortable.

Well that is dissapointing. I always liked Elisabeth and agree with her the most out of anyone on that show...:

I like Elisabeth too, but I have to say that I am disappointed by some of the things that come out of her mouth. She expresses opinions that I just don't think she has really thought about, she is a Bush supporter and frequently spouts propaganda that just does not make sense. Now, I was never a huge fan of Rosie O'Donnell...but I have a lot more respect for her now because she frequently will tell Elisabeth that she is wrong and that her views are not well thought out.

I was really offended by the comments Elisabeth made about the LLL groups when she was pregnant, calling them pushy and overly aggressive. But I have always found that people who feel uncomfortable with bf choose to see promoters of breast-feeding as pushy because by dismissing the groups as fanatic they don't have to examine their own misinformed beliefs.

Lesley, what irritated me the most about what she said about LLL women was that millions of women at home are watching this and writing off LLL before they even meet the women. So one group is "bad", find one that you click with. I wouldn't say that all women are crazy, heinous, psycho, witches (with a b) just because I know a few that qualify for that title.

The way the story seemed to me was that some moms with slings told her to nurse and she decided they were from LLL. That's the way it sounded to me, stereotyping. But I wasn't there.

It wasn't a LLL meeting, she was at a public outdoor place, at a zoo or park or something.

IIRC, she was at Disneyland.

If we *really* wanted to know, I could probably look this all up in my archived emails and such, because I kind of kept track of it all, as it was happening, so when the Nurse-In occured, I was able to give a history to the NYTimes reporter who covered it.

BTW, I posted the Jimmy Kimmel clip on YouTube. There was an MDC connection to get that - this was the Tuesday night after the Nurse-In (which was Monday). My dh had broke a tooth, and gone to the city to have it fixed, and was staying overnight at my SIL's. She sometimes watches Jimmy Kimmel (I had never heard of him), so she mentioned to dh, maybe we should see if he mentions the Nurse_in on his monologue. Sure enough, at the very end of his monologue - he slammed Barbara! Dh's jaw dropped to the floor - because we had spent the last 2 days trying to get transcripts to show of what Babs had originally said, and then when she lied on Tuesday, we wanted to prove it. But we couldn't get tapes or transcripts.

Jimmy Kimmel gave us the proof. So dh phoned me (I was up almost 24 hours a day handling media at that point). I got on MDC, and alerted for any West Coast MDC'er to tape it when it came on again later. A mom in Las Vegas got it on her computer, and within a few hours we had uploaded it to a free video share share (no YouTube then yet), and by the time the East Coast media were waking up, we had already sent a new press release with the video link, and the story picked up even more steam! Cause now we were shown to be in the right, Babs had lied, and what journalist wouldn't like to sting Barbara Walters????

I had the original video from the Las Vegas mom, so I uploaded it to YouTube a couple of months ago.

So that is why that clip is there, but no others.

Janice you are so awesome.

What kind of equipment do you need to share files and make and post videos on You Tube? Anything fancy or just a computer?

Just a computer. Its easy to upload. I don't have any mechanism to make digital recordings from TV - the mom in Las Vegas had that, to get the really clear clip of Jimmy Kimmel. Then she just emailed me the file, and I uploaded it. There are some other versions of it on YouTube - but they are poor quality. I suspect they are copies of the original that we had uploaded to Zippy Videos right when we first got it.

As for the CNN clip - it was on their website for about a week after the Nurse-In. I knew it wouldn't be available forever, and I don't know how to save video from the internet. So my wierd way of capturing it, is to sit and video it right from the computer screen, with my digital camera. I make sure the room is quiet and dark, and I sit quietly and tape it. That's why the CNN clip is poor quality - but at least you can get the idea.

The photo montage I made with free software - Photo Story. It was pretty easy, but I spent alot of time tweeking it to put the photos in an order that made sense to the music, and I could tweek the timing and pacing, and panning. I actually really enjoyed the process, and would like to get more photos and make more videos, perhaps with that same song, since it suits so well.

Yeah, Jimmy Kimmel saved us like $500 - that's how much they wanted for the transcripts (not even a video, just a transcript). I'll always have a soft spot for him.

And yes, I'm immature enough to chuckle at the last name of the CNN reporter.

I love that Australian commercial!

Me too, I wonder if they gave it to her for a reason, like if the complainers were like, "We hate nursing in public, we're going to complain" and then said, "Wait, what is the woman's name?"

That CNN reporter always does the kind of lighter, cynical or funny kind of news items. So they certainly didn't give it to the "hard news" reporter.

Wow that video of the protests was very inspiring. It actually brought tears to my eyes to see all those Moms standing up for each other and the rights of breastfeeding children.
Very cool!
