Using rainwater for laundry?

We have a rain barrel and there is a downspout right outside the basement window above our washing machine. I think I could rig a hose up to the barrel and feed it down to the washing machine in order to use rainwater to do laundry. But I'm not sure if this is "done," or if the water would be clean enough to wash clothes with.

Does anyone here have any experience with this?

TIA!

Sure you can, we have friends who harvest rain water and use it for everything but drinking.Thats so cool.I am sure you can find a website about rain water harvesting

Lots of people do that here and it works great. it is actually better for your clothes because it does not have the harsh chemicals in it that city water has. I am going to set up gutters this year to water my garden with and the animals and stuff. Good Luck :

I think it's a great idea. The only caveat I can think of is if there is a lot of sediment that comes off of your roof. Could you somehow filter the water before it gets into you washing machine?

Actually, I think I'm going to pass on this idea. I love it in theory, but I'm a bit worried about possible bacteria, fertilizer residue, and mold being in the water.

So instead I'm going to bring our extra (we have two) rain barrel inside and hook it up to collect the wastewater from our reverse osmosis filter. I can't believe how much water that thing wastes! Since it's right next to our laundry area I think this will work pretty well.

The only thing is that getting the water from the barrel to the washer will be pretty putzy -- I'm thinking I'll have to use the spigot on the rain barrel to put water in a bucket, and then haul the bucket over to the washer, and do that until the washer is full. With my other idea I could have left the barrel outside and gravity would have allowed me to use a hose hooked up to the spigot and go directly in to the washer.
