Readers Bill of Rights

Readers have the right to...

1. not read
2. skip pages
3. not finish whatever they are reading
4. to re-read
5. to read anything
6. to read for escapism
7. to read anywhere
8. to browse
9. to read out loud
10. to not defend their tastes in reading material

I picked it up at the local library. I thought it was very cool, and made me think of expectations we sometimes place on children around reading.

I will admit, I do not let my 11 yr old read "anything" (# 5), as he wants to read some adultish themed anime - I am quite liberal and flexible, but there is a line in the sand on this issue.

In any event, I thought I would share. Enjoy!

I think I will have to print that and add it to my "curriculum".

I used to get so mad when kids would do other things while I was reading and then I realized it was o.k. My youngest can look at her own book and still get the general idea from the book i am reading outloud.

A local library had the Readers Bill of Rights displayed on a desk a few years back- I liked it so much I asked the librarian to copy it for me- She happily obliged! It still makes me smile.
