I keep seeing Vitex mentioned on these boards and have no idea what it is! Could anyone(s) explain why and how it is used? Is it a tea? A pill?

Does anyone or has anyone used it and what has it done for you? Am quite curious! Thanks in advance.

Do you have to get it from a doctor, or is it over the counter?

Although I still haven't found a full answer to my question from reading a bit more, try searching for "Vitex" in titles of messages on all the forums here. There are a bunch of posts. The more I read the more confusing it seems but we'll see.

It looks like Chasteberry tea is the tea form of Vitex. I am not sure what the difference is if you take the tea versus a pill.

Also, I found this link with some information that I have not seen anywhere else (unless I have just not read far enough into the threads here):

I bought mine at Whole Foods. I took it because at 21 months post partum I had still not had a period. I got AF 2 months after starting vitex, then got pg right away.

But what is it? Herb, homeopathic, vitamin, mineral, medicine?

What is it supposed to do and how?

After DS was born I took it to lengthen my luteal phase. My LP was 6 days and I felt that was too short to sustain a pregnancy (DS was about 1) and the first cycle on it I got pregnant with DD.

Vitex a.k.a. chasteberry is an herb. It can come in pill, tea, or tincture form. It is readily available in natural food stores and online. It is very safe and helps promote a healthy reproduction system by acting on the pituitary gland (which somehow is in "charge" of estrogen and progesterone, etc).

I took it while I was ttc #1. I was having no luck conceiving after 8 months and had long cycles (32-42 days) and very painful cramps. I read that vitex should help. I took it for 2 weeks and then had a bit of spotting. Two weeks later, I had my period, but is was very light and not very painful. Two weeks later, I became pregnant. So, I do believe that the vitex helped even out my hormones some and I was finally able to get pg. I have read that it helps with menopause, too.
