Stretch and Sweep?!?

Any of you out there ever be the lucky recipients of a stretch and sweep? My midwife did it to me twice yesterday (my cervix was pretty tight, so she couldn't really do the 'full sweep' and then another one early this afternoon, and she said my cervix was very much improved since yesterday. She could stretch me to four centimeters. This afternoon she managed to do the full sweep, which is probably good.

The reason for all this is that I have cholestasis and none of the doctors are willing to consider inducing me prior to 40 weeks (I'm only about 37 now...). As far as I'm concerned, based on HOURS of research, the risks outweight the benefits where waiting for natural labor is concerned right now. Baby will be safer on the outside, so that is what we're trying for.

SO I wanted to know if any of you have been stretched and swept, and if it worked for you when it happened. The tentative plan is that tommorow morning my midwife will rupture my membranes if things aren't going by then, and hopefully that will do something.

Then if that doesn't work, we'll have to go to the hospital within about 24 hours to get some drugs to speed things up.

So that's my issue. Stories please. And by the way you guys are the best, the way you offer up your personal stories.

I had a stretch and sweep and went into labor 2 days later. But I was 41 weeks so that might have had something to do with it. I was stretchy to 4 cm as well though so maybe that will help you. I did have ctx the same night but they kinda tapered off as the night went on.

No advice or experience to offer, but hope it all goes well for you!

I just had this done last week. She couldn't get very far either because I was still a little closed up. HOWEVER, it has made a HUGE difference. I went in this week and I seem to be progressing.

Hang in there! I hope it goes well!!

What's the difference between a stretch and sweep and stripping membranes??

Thanks! I'm just curious!

I'm pretty sure it's the same thing...
I had one last time and had my baby 12 hours later. I was 40 weeks on the dot and two cm dilated when she did it.
That said, I have a friend who will be 41 weeks tomorrow and has had a sweep every day this week and so far nothing. So who knows! I hope it works for you though...good luck.

Thanks guys for enlightening me!!

I had one without being told last pregnancy. It hurt!!! I had problems walking out afterwards! Had the baby a few days later, but was passed 40 weeks as well...

I had my membranes stripped twice in one appointment with dd#1. I was 40w5d. Left the appointment at about noon, started having contractions at about 1-2PM, dd was born the next night at 9:30PM. I don't remember it being especially painful.

Best to you ... I know you must be worried.

The first one I had when I was still closed up really tight did hurt a fair bit... not that I really cared at that point....
The one I had the next day was easier by far.
Now it's 5 in the morning and I"m up because I'm so excited / apprehensive as to what's going to happen when my midwife breaks my water open in a few short hours. Anyone who reads this please send me vibes for a swift, productive, safe labor.
